I purchased a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC in july of 2015 and installed it in my PC, was working fine until about 10 days or so ago when i was playing World of Warcraft the screen went black and i was unable to do anything other than reboot the PC, i've since tried this on 2 or 3 occasions since then and the same problem.
I've tested my memory to see if that would be a possible cause and the memory test came back okay, so i am wondering is it a problem with the graphics card, can someone please give me ideas or solutions as it is baffling the hell out of me

i can get in to the desktop, it quite happily runs movies and also Star Trek Online which i also play, it just seems to happen with World of Warcraft
The spec is as follows:-

AMD FX 6120 @ 3.1GHz
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
8 GB DDR3 Ram
Akasa Venom Voodoo CPU Cooler
Cooler Master HAF 912 Case
Asrock 970 Extreme 4 Motherboard
Windows 10

Any other information that i might have missed...?

the thing that puzzles me, is why it would do it now, considering the graphics card is like 6 months old and had been running world of warcraft on max settings since i purchased it with no problems, i've tried all the things i thought it could be and it is still baffling me big time

was playing star trek online about an hour ago, pc was running fine, then it went relatively silent (ie quieter than normal) and the screen went black and i had to reboot the pc there was also a smell coming from the PC, would a faulty PSU cause the problems i am having...?

that i dont know to be honest, all i know is that there was an burnt like smell that came off the pc, i left it alone for 20 mins or so, turned PC back on, fans seem to be running okay, havent risked playing any games although i can watch movies and such fine

i made sure that it doesnt automatically update when i first got windows 10 on it, and the latest nvidia drivers have been uploaded, i'm trying to figure out if the smell i smelt was the PSU or whether it was the graphics card, the graphics card is only 6 months old whereas the PSU is older, it only seems to be suffering when i play the games i mentioned, at the time of typing this i am watching a movie quite happily

i play world of warcraft and for months the pc was fine, no problems at all running the game at max settings, then about 3 or 4 weeks ago, i was playing WOW and the screen went black, i had to reboot the PC.
This happened on two or three occasions so i decided formatting the PC and putting on Windows 10, tried playing WOW this time and it worked for about 10 mins then the screen went black and i had to reboot again. Was playing another game i play Star Trek Online and was playing for about 25 mins or so this evening and it did the same thing, the computer went really quiet in comparison to its normal sound (ie fans whirring) there was also a burnt smell, so i rebooted and voila back it came, havent tried running any games since

the card is a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card bought from overclockers in july 2015, i havent touched it other than install it in to the PC, and the CPU hasnt been touched in any way either, are you thinking it could be the CPU...? what would the smell be coming from then...?

the smell isnt there all the time and as to where it is coming from i couldnt identify where and its bugging the hell out of me, as i dont know what it is that is causing the problem, initially thought it was perhaps a software problem hence me doing a format and install of windows 10, it wasnt

nope i havent left any plastic on the front of the card, if it was a problem with the gpu wouldnt it havent manifested itself prior to about 6 months of usage, and if there was a problem with the GPU why is it only when i was trying to run WOW which it had been running perfectly up till then, its most puzzling

tell me about it, i cant figure out what the cause might be, is it the motherboard..? i dont know, i did test the memory and the memory seems to be fine from the test i ran, i'm trying to be logical and think what it could possibly be, i thought 1) gpu, 2)cpu, 3)psu, 4)MB so its trying to eliminate which it could be to leave the what it is thats causing the fault

there are only three games i play regularly on this pc, world of warcraft, diablo 3 and star trek online, and they were all running fine until i encountered this problem, i havent tried diablo 3 since formatting the hard drive and putting on windows 10 as i dont want to have the same thing happen as it is with world of warcraft, and when it occured this evening i was playing star trek online and the sound of the fans on the pc went quieter than usual and i got the black screen i had before, not sure what fan went though, whether it was the psu fan, the cpu fan or one of the case fans
