I am offering an item on gumtree worth a few grand so I'm being pretty cautious about this. Someone with a gmail address has asked if he could pay via paypal and for me to send him a payment request. He also mentioned he'd like to send the money asap so I could send the item asap (by tomorrow or the day after).

If he does send me the money, how easy is it for him to stop the transaction going through? Even if the Paypal transaction status says "Complete" is it still possible that the money won't actually go through?

Even if he sounds completely legit there's no point in taking the risk when that amount of money is involved.

I'd ask for Bank transfer only.

I got this last week from Gumtree

Hi my husband has been through a rough time lately and he loves iPhones but something came up which means I no longer have any money to buy anything it's his birthday on Wednesday, so would I be able to have it for free it would truly mean allot thank you PS would you be able to send it.

Do not use PayPal for this. They will do a chargeback and PayPal will take the money. If it was £30, fair enough, but thousands just aren't worth it.

Step 1: make a thread opening with your post

Step 2: reply to the message saying, 'Oh you have a husband, that's a pity. I would send the iphone but things have gotten so lonely since becoming single and i use it to find respite from the social emptiness my life has become'

Step 3: continue to update the thread with replies as a very bad scammer attempts to woe you into giving away your iphone. Dont play hard to get but rather the socially inept desperate man that often solo inhabits clubs clearly for people half his age and awkwardly hovers in the corner with a coke nodding his head to the beats.

Step 4: Eventually agree to send it if they are willing to send postage or pick it up.

Step 5: Poo in box and post.

Step 6: PROFIT!

The bets way to treat Paypal is that every transaction can be reversed. I also never, ever trust anything on ebay or gumtree.
