Considering switching from my current rig to an ivy setup. Current rig is.

i7 920 DO @4.0ghz
Asus p6t deluxe v2
12gb kingston hyper x
Gigabyte gtx 670 wf
Asus xonar DX
Ocz vertex 2e 120gb bigfoot
1TB samsung F3
Lg blu ray combo drive
Bitfenix shinobi xl case
Corsair HX850W psu

A friend has expressed an interest in my current cpu board and ram due to his system dying. And id like something newer while i can still sell the old kit at a worthwhile price. I thought about haswell, but its still a bit off. Been looking at the following parts.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-403-IN

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-510-AS

Still undecided on what ram and how much, wether 8 0r 16gb, it will have to be low profile though as ill be using the Alpenfohn k2 dual tower cooler from my current rig.

sounds good to me
im sure ur friend will be happy at the speed of that too

i think only u know if 16gb is worth it to u or not, windows8 wont be using extra memory if that helps you decide

i use a ramdisk here with one of the pc's and wow thats fast^^ so its not always pointless

looks cheap :o tho i guess you can get faster 8gb if you not going to use it
and depends how crazy u oc huh^^

Is there a reason to go for 3770K, do a lot of video editing? as if it's more for gaming it's usual for a 3570K to be enough, ram choice, I went with 16gb, just basically because it was cheap enough, I have read that corsair ram can be troublesome with Asus boards so worth bearing in mind, samsung green seems a good bet, low profile so that's covered and potential for plenty of overclocking from them.

Yep, i will be oc'ing, and ive used team memory before. Excellent ram, had 4gb of team extreme ddr2 in an earlier s775 build, micron d9 chips that oc'd extremely well.

I do a bit of video editing/encoding. Heard about asus and corsair not working well together before, but ive got 6gb of corsair xms3 in my other x58 rig, (asus p6 x58de) and it's been grand. Or is it more common on newer platforms?

Well I read it on a z77 board, so might be wise to give corsair a miss, just in case, nothing worse than trying to find what's wrong with an unstable system than memory problems:)

Yep, i remember with my old s939 systems, asus a8n sli boards and corsair ram were a poor combo for me. I then switched to using ocz reaper kits, right through to my current rig, until i replaced the 6gb of reaper with the kingston 12gb kit.

Regarding cooling, ive read that the ib cpu's can be a tad hot running? My current i7 920 chucks out a fair bit of heat, but im hoping that ib runs a bit cooler.

Well the ivy does indeed run quite a lot hotter:(, 20-30c more than sandy roughly using the same cooling which is not good, but that is under such things as prime95 and intel burn test.

I have in fact only just gone to ivy from sandy 2500k, temps are a little shocking at first but I have just set it to 45 turbo and left everything on auto including the cpu voltage and while gaming its hiting around 63c so all is well.

I don't intend to be running stress test all day long so as long as my temps while gaming are fine I'm not too fussed, quite a few have delided them but tbh it's only worth it if you want to shoot for 5ghz 24/7 which is overkill anyway and not worth risking a chip for imo, maybe one day I will delid it, but not any time soon.

In short, don't worry about temps unless you really want to be stress testing your system for lengthy periods of time.:)

Here's a little screen grab:)

But everyday normal use see's a max of about 63c, this is under a full water cooling loop with a 480 and 240 rad, so it's not the cooling, it's the bad paste intel have used.
