Possible Mobo issue

I've got myself a bit of a problem with my current PC which I'm thinking is mobo or cpu related. Just thought I'd ask for advice before splurging out on replacement parts. Currently running an old 2.67ghz i5 750 at 3.75 ghz on an Asus P755d (idles 23 degrees, 50-55 under load), with 8gb DDR3 (4x2gb) and a ASUS 7950 DCUII.

On Saturday, whilst mid game, the pc just quietly powered down. Powering it back on from the switch did nothing. There was a light on the motherboard indicating standby power but no further life. I purchased a replacement powersupply thinking that was the issue (Cooolermaster 700w one on the today only over the weekend) but installing that led to no improvement. Tried booting it up in various configurations and very occasionally, it would get life but only briefly. Saw a message on screen saying ASUS Express gate was having trouble so reset bios then disabled express gate altogether. It then booted a bit more reliably and I did get into Windows on a couple off occasions. When in windows, it seemed stable (now at 2.66ghz), but the onboard network was not detected. On reboots it was hit an miss whether it booted. I managed to flash the BIOS to the latest non-beta release and after reconfiguring it to pick up my drives, it booted once into windows with the same network issue before it appears to have completely died again. Can't even get a display anymore to get into BIOS. Sometimes, after it powers on, it powers itself off for a while, then back on again. Seems very random. Have also tried swapping out the GPU with my old 4870 and it makes no improvement. Having spent money on the PSU, I'm wary on spending more if it's isn't needed.

I'm presuming it's the mobo or cpu and am looking at using this as an opportunity to upgrade. Anything else I might be missing out on. I'm going on holiday tomorrow and would like to order the parts for my return. Any suggestions on a replacement would be appreciated. Preferably something that will work with my cooler - a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 so I can overclock it some and the memory I have to keep costs down. I love how cool that thing kept my current CPU!

Thanks in advance!

try with just one stick of ram installed first, and do an overnight cmos clear, leave motherboard battery out overnight, then put in and load optimised defaults in the bios and see how you get on

Problem with all that is I'm out of time for those sort of extensive tests :( Going to America tomorrow and would rather have bits ready when I came back. I guess I might just have to test it when I'm back and put off Diablo 3 for a bit longer. It's bad enough that Blizzard scheduled release week to clash with my holiday :P

Thanks for your advice anyways. Much appreciated..

pick up a few bits in the u.s?

then sort out that board later down the road, looking at your gpu id choose a z77 board and either a sb or ib cpu?
