Hi all,

After selling all of my equipment last year due to other commitments, I am now back in the position to purchase some new equipment.

I have listed below what I have in my basket with an online retailer, I don't want to commit until I have covered all angles. As I am starting from scratch again, would like opinions on the below, I will not be urchasing the kit lens.

Canon EOS 400d
Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 28 - 135 F3.5 IS
Sigma 500 Super DG Flash Gun
Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic
Sandisk Extreme IV 1gb
Sandisk Extreme IV 2gb
Hoya 52mm UV Filter
Hoya 72mm UV Filter
MN728B Digi Compact 3-way Head Tripod Kit

Appreciate all thoughts

Looks pretty good to me, but I can't really comment on the lenses etc, as I don't know what you're going to be shooting. Certainly the 50mm f/1.8 is a brilliant lens - I love mine. The 28-135 gets fairly good reviews, but it might be worth looking at a few alternatives too ... reviews here.

I would say that the the 400D can't write anywhere near fast enough to actually make good use of the Extreme 4 cards, so you could save a lot of money by getting something slightly further down the sandisk range, without seeing any performance difference.

I take it you're buying this from the internet store of a well-known high street retailer, so I would also point out that you could save a lot on this by getting as much as possible from someone like Kerso. My 50mm f/1.8 was almost half the price of the aforementioned online store through him.

Hello, fellow Peterborough person! :D

I can only comment on the 400D, as that is the only one I have. Great camera, though you may find it small, that said, I don’t know what you had before. A battery grip will help out.

I use a bog standard 1Gb Integral card and the write times are fine for me, though I don’t photo sport. As has been said you may want to look at other cards as the write speed is not that relevant with the 400D.

Also, the widest lens you have is 44.8 (35mm equiv), so depending on what you shoot, you may want to consider the kit lens or perhaps the Sigma equivalent.
