Hello, My current subscription for Norton is up for renewal in a few days and while I will renew it I'm interested in hearing what others use and suggest before I go Norton again, I've been using Norton for the last 5 years and it's A, not cheap & b, sometimes a pain.

I'm less interested in a free version because I do think you get what you pay for, therefore I'd rather pay something than nothing if it's a better all round product.

I started with Norton 360 which has a different name now but whatever I go with I want it to be one product to cover everything, ie Internet, virus, identity theft etc.

I've been using Avast free edition for about 3 years now. Never had any problems with it and it's never let anything nasty in. Unlike Norton it doesn't seem to hog system resources either. They do also have a paid version, which I haven't used.

I would avoid McAfee though - just like Norton it's expensive and I've had to solve more problems with versions of that than any other AV package.

From experience I agree with you when you say you get what you pay for. In certain situations TheVoice's input is also enough dependant on your knowledge level and what you use the machine for.

I did try Norton on one of my machines last year to see if they had turned a corner after they went downhill after the 90's but I found them to be woeful and did not renew the subsciption.

ESET is good, at one point I was a reseller. I have found Bitdefenders free scanner a happy medium which is not intrusive and pretty good. Kaspersky is thorough but I never liked them for the price and seem to make the system sluggish if underpowered.

I would recommend you try Dr.Web as they give you a decent trial period for a few months. If you dont like it move onto something else till you find one you get on with. You can also get some great prices by buying keys off resellers on popular sites.

If you happen to have a Barclay's account you can get a free two license copy of Kaspersky. I have an old dormant account with about £20 in it which I used :D.

Failing that for a paid one I'd probably go ESET :).
