Possible PSU blown

I recently upgraded my PSU to RM750x in December. All been running fine and then this evening we were watching a programme on it and then the TV went blank and said no signal.

All fans had shut down, no lights inside but the power light was still on.

I shut it down and booted it back up and immediately there was a loud short pop and smoke immediately came out of the top of the case. My wife saw where it came from.

It was from the 24pin connector and I've pulled it out and it stinks. I don't have a clue if it's taken out any of my other components at the moment.

Checked my motherboard and can't see any blown capacitors.

The PSU does not smell so I'm not sure if it's just the cable but I don't dare risk plugging it back in to test and I think it would be quite unwise.

I do have my older 750w PSU that I could try to test with but what does everyone think?

If it is the PSU and it has damaged other components will Corsair cover the cost of replacements?

Motherboard: Aorus X570 Elite
GPU: AMD 7800xt
CPU: 5800X3D
PSU: Corsair RM750x

Thanks in advance

Sorry, I meant the 24 pin connector
Look over the 24 pin on the motherboard side if possible post a pic so we can have a look, as long as there are no burn marks or melting signs on the motherboard connector you should be fine.

Had a friend back when we were at college that had the same thing happen but his PSU cooked the board as well as the PSU.

I will upload a photo shortly but I did have a close look and couldn't see any damage to the board.

I've put in a return request to site I purchased from. Had less than year, so thought it would be quicker than doing an RMA to Corsair.

Uploaded some photos

I think it's taken out my motherboard. I've tried another PSU on the motherboard with nothing connected to the board other than power wires from case and it won't boot at all.

I've tried the same PSU on another old motherboard I have and it works on that

What is the condition of the back of the motherboard like?

Any damage to the 24 pin cable?

Also check the 8 pin EPS socket and cable.

Checked both cables and they look fine but 24pin connector smells burnt.

Can't see any damage to the connectors on the board or around the area.

Tried another PSU on the motherboard and the PSU fan doesn't start up

Tried same PSU on an old motherboard and the fan on the PSU fires up.

any sign of life like rgb effects with the 2nd psu connected to the board?

it may be worth taking out your Aorus X570 Elite and checking the backside for any burn or scorch marks, pics of the 24pin look good, no obvious signs of damage, what does the psu connector look like after the problem?

Im not sure if that cable is partially melted, hard to tell but that particular area smells really bad.

Can't see any damage on the motherboard. When plugging in my other PSU the lights flash for less than a second and then all go off.

jesus that 24pin got pretty hot to partially melt multiple wires at least 2 i can see, and regard to the mobo lights going out after a few seconds suggests hidden damage within the board, or a capacitor that has gone bad, connecting a second psu the motherboard should have a few led's lit up to indicate standby power, if they go out something is wrong with the board, have you checked over the cpu, ram, gpu and storage devices, do any of those smell as bad as the psu wires?

regarding the smell, is it a very pungent and acrid?

Smelled everything and and the only smell is coming from the connector of the cable and the section I took a photo of. It smells like burnt plastic, the room still smells this morning.

Fingers crossed it only took out my motherboard. Hoping that Corsair will consider partially reimbursing me for the damage caused.

The 24 pin cable does look like it has melted at least a couple of wires. Any signs of burning on the pins?

That is one drawback with having all those wires lumped together under single heatshrink.

Is there any signs of damage to any other part of the motherboard, not just around the sockets?

I've checked all over the board and can't seem any obvious signs of damage. Checkef the capacitors and no swelling or obvious signs of damage.

No obvious signs of burning on the pins on either connector on motherboard of cable itself.
