Afternoon you power nuts!

I have been having an issue with my PC which i am swaying towards the PSU as the possible culprit

I have ordered a Thermaltake PSU tested from the rainforrest and I will be using this to test it.

It is a 7 year old Coolermaster M850 and its been as solid as a rock since the day i bought it.

However, if this tester confirms my suspicions I will want to replace it.

I have the following 2 units in my mind as a suitable replacement but I wondered which one is "better"

This will go nice with the 750D i am also going to order

or this one:

Been told they are a good solid PSU.

Anyone have any light to shed on the 2?

Neither. The Corsair is meh and overpriced and the Superflower has those tacky led's where you plug the cables in that are bright and can't be turned off. The EVGA Supernova G2 850w is where my money would go. It's a Superflower built unit and is based on their Leadex Gold platform but has no led's and EVGA gives it a whopping 10 year warranty.

Do you actually need that much power though? What are your specs?

Funnily enough as I was doing my research i just changed my mind to that exact PSU after finding out exactly what you have said about OEM/warranty.

My spec is as follows:

I5 2500k @4.4 on air (currently but looking to change to a H105 when i have some more pennies)
8GB Xms3 Ram
P8P67 Pro
Crucial M4 256 SSD
2x 750 GB WD caviar blacks (more internal drives to come probably another 2x mech drives and 1 more SSD)
Asus R9 290 4GB
Samsung BD Drive.
Soon to be put into a 750D case (when i order this month)

Well if i put in (on a psu calculator) it recommends a 750W EVGA supernova (with added HDD's for future)

I always like to have a bit of overhead incase i upgrade certain bits in the future then the PSU is a bit future proof which i why i have always had an 850W.

Sometimes i have the option to get beefy cards from work to test so its always nice to have the PSU to do it.

Ok so here is a curve ball.

PSU tester has confirmed that the PSU is ok. I am not sure how much to trust the tester (Thermaltake Dr Power II).

I have ordered a new case (corsair 750D) and am a bit skeptical to use the old rock PSU in my case swap now.

And thats the thing that is making me feel like I should really replace it.

None of my kit is super high end anymore and its getting on a bit its just a case of spending £100 extra or not ..

OK so let me try and summarize my issues:

MY rig:
I5 2500k @4.6 on air (noctua CPU cooler)
8GB Xms3 Ram 1200mhz
P8P67 Pro
Crucial M4 256 SSD
2x 750 GB WD caviar blacks
Asus GTX 670 2GB - Have a boxed R9 290 4GB to install with the new case
Samsung BD Drive.
Current case is an old Antec 900
Coolermaster M850 semi modular PSU (7 years old)

New case on its way tomorrow is a Corsair 750D

I have been having 2 issues which i think are unrelated.

1. I suffer a double post on boot issue - Which looks like its an issue with the P8P67 Pro motherboard. The machine will power, post, show connected HDD's then power off completely and then power back on, post and boot as normal.

This has always been apparent since i built the PC. Overclocked or stock this issue will happen at random. There are extensive fixes suggested online and as its not really been an issue ive always just ignored it.

However more recently i have experienced another issue (again not all the time, but more often recently)

2. The machine will power (all fans, lights etc.) yet no display/post. The LCD will not wake from standby.
You can hard power off the machine, unplug everything, power it back on and sometimes it will boot as normal, or sometimes it will take a good half hour to get itself booting normally.
Once in windows it is as solid and stable as a rock. I can bench it (prime95 for hours with temps within normal operation for the chip and the overclock) I ran a memtest off usb for 7 hours overnight and this passed with no issues.

I bought a PSU tester from amazon and took my pc in to work today. Tested the PSU and this passed the tester without errors.

I got a chap at work to sanity check the issues with me, although at the time the machine was booting first time with no issues, he suggested that we update the bios.

When we went to do this, the unit crashed on the splash screen. Changing out the RAM with another set (8gb in 4x2GB Vengance sticks 2000mhx) and the machine posted and booted as normal so we updated the BIOS.
We set up the overclock again, and then left the unit running prime95 all afternoon.

Again temps all fine (didn't go past 85 Degrees in our hot office)

So currently a bit miffed.

It could be the RAM, although this passed memtest. It could have been a corrupt bios/setting or it still could be the PSU on its way out.
I know this is quite hard to follow in terms of the fault but i am trying to put it across as simple as i can, which given the nature of the issue is proving quite hard ...
