Hi all,
I ordered a Titan Vulcan (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-046-OE) during the one week offer over easter and received the system on Wednesday.
It's been performing well so far, except i've had two games crash already (Left 4 Dead and Lord of the Rings Online).
On both occassions, everything was running fine prior to the crash, no slowdowns or artifacts, but then suddenly the games stalled, random pink areas appeared on the screen and sound looping. I could ctrl+alt+del and shutdown the games in task manager both times and the desktop displays fine afterwards, however any attempt to relaunch a game or even play a video results in the same thing. A system restart then had things back up and running again.
I tried reinstalling the latest ATI drivers after the first time (on L4d), but unfortunately it did then do it again on Lotro.
I then uninstalled the drivers again and tried installing them using the package without the Catalyst Control Center, and then installed AMD OverDrive.
I've just had a brief bash at L4D again and didn't crash out (although i didn't play for all that long so it's not very definitive), but interestingly, i then tried using the Stability Test in AMD OverDrive. I ticked all of the boxes and set it to run for just a minute. It did complete, but right at the end AMD OverDrive itself crashed before i could see any results, and then games/video failed to work just as had happened before.
This now leads me to think that perhaps it isn't an issue with the HD 4870 gfx card but could possibly be a power supply issue?
I didn't notice when i ordered, but the Vulcan system only comes with a 500W PSU which strikes me as a little low... I've not yet opened the case, but may try that tomorrow just to make sure everything is seated correctly, but just thought i would also post here to see if anyone has any other ideas or suggestions as to what it could be.
Sorry for the long explanation.
Cheers,
Sam.
[Edit] Will need to wait until the next time (if) it does it again, but after crapping out during the AMD OverDrive stability test, putting the system into sleep and then waking it up again seemed to resolve things (instead of a full system restart), which perhaps also lends credibility to it being a power issue?
