OK, am at work and the PC at home but wanted to get ideas on possible reasons for this, so that I can try and sort it when I get back.

At this point I am not sure if it is one drive, or several, but I can be sitting there doing nothing bu browsing, and I will hear a drive spinning up and down quite frequently.

This is in Vista 64. there are 4 drives - one 500GB WD, 2 x 250GB Seagate 7200.10, and one 250GB Hitachi.

Is it likely to be a drive dying on me? Or might it be some or other power saving feature? I have not played with the power settings in Vista yet, and its a fresh install.

So, like I said, am just trying to get an idea of possible causes so that I might know what to do when I get home.

I have a secondary drive and also using Vista and i get the same problem, I think ithe drive are just going into power save mode even though i disabled it in control panel.

I'm sure you have the same issue tbh.

Glad to know its now jsut me. Had so much crap with hardware lately that I jsut don't want yet another thign to go wrong.

But I would like to stop this from happening. not only do I think it is not healthy for the drives to be constantly spenning up and down, but It causes the system to pause while it starts up, and is immensely annoying.

Same here with XP. At first I thought it was a case fan slowing down then speeding up. I tracked the noise down to my Samsung RAID0. Had me worried for a while, it hasn't happend for a few days now.
