Hi there I think I might have a ryzen 7 1700 black screen problem, for a while now my screen keeps going a funny colour (green, yellow, white, pink, black and blue) and basically crashes, and I have to restart the pc either from the on off button or turning the psu off and then on again, ive changed hdmi wires and tried different tvs, and its def not them, ive formatted windows many times with different versions in the last year but nothing helps, I thought it might be the graphics card, but I didn’t have a replacement to check so I put my old cpu (amd a4 A10 processor) with onboard graphics in a month ago and have been montoring it weekly with no problems what so ever so I decided to put the gpu back in 2 weeks ago and try it, I didn’t have any other connection options so I bought a display port to hdmi convertor, just incase it was an hdmi slot problem, and have had no problems whatsoever with that either so earlier tonight I decided to put the ryzen 7 back in and after about 3 hours the screan has went about 6 different colours and crashed just like before and if had to restart everytime, im getting really annoyed now, ive checked all drivers and everything is up to date, ive been looking online and others are having the same kind of problem with other ryzen cpu's but no real solutions, I don’t have any asus or amd programs running, ive not overclocked anything at all, so I haven’t got a clue whats happeinig

Ive just had to put the old processor back in as everytime I click a different tab on the taskbar its going a fuinny colour and crashing, I typed this up in word just incase it crashed as it auto saves it, so im glad I did now

Ryzen 7 1700 – just a year old

16Gb ram - couple of years old

Asus prime b350 motherboard year and a half old

Gtx 1050ti 4gb – less than a year old

120gb ssd - 3 months old

Windows 10 1909

850w psu – coming up for a year old

Thanks in advance for any helping sorting out this problem

I take you definitely connected the cable to the GPU connection when you plugged in you Athlon as opposed to the motherboard HDMI ports?

Can't think what differences there might be, the Ryzen probably has more active power management, does it crash equally in all usage (i.e. games, idle desktop, browsing)?

Edit: the default memory speed might be higher, though if you don't change the settings, perhaps not.

its not crashed when ive been gaming, its usually when im surfing the net, clicking a tab on ther taskbar usually or sometimes before it would go weird after automatic screen turn off and hibernation or sleep wake up but they hace all been turned off now and i just do it manually, screen doesnt go off at all now

Which power supply model is it

first thing i'd be trying is adding more voltage to the cpu and gpu see if that fixes it maybe the whole thing was on the cusp of stable and has a small amount of degradation

tried swapping pci express slots on the gpu ? or reseats and or bios resets ?

testing the ram too maybe one stick or slot on the board is faulty

sounds more like a gpu issue to me though

Have you tried setting the power management in Windows to maximum performance? If it's not crashing in games, I wonder if it's clocking down too much and something can't handle it.

psu - artic blue silent 850w

i was running memtest but the pc has just crashed and restarted, not sure if its related but ive had to restart the pc more than 6 times in the last few hours and put the other cpu back in so it might be a bit unstable atm, think its all down to the cpu and its not suitable with something else, i just dont know what, the gpu works fine with the a10 cpu, if its the psu then i think i would be crashing when im playing games and stuff though i will try swapping the ram sticks one at a time into the other 2 slots tomorrow for a week or 2 but i need to put the ryzen 7 back in but after tonight the amount of crashing is going to cause a lot more trouble than its worth having to keep hard resetting it

ive put the processor power management - maximum power state to 100% but i need to put the ryzen back in to see if it makes a difference

i was running memtest but the pc has just crashed and restarted,

windows memtest or DOS memtest?

the latter is the one to us, the former needs windows environment which is not particualrly good to start off if things are not stable

if memtest is failing it means something memory and CPU related. if you run test with the athlon and no issues but the 3600x has issues then the CPU is at fault.

ill run memtest again during the night, with the a10 and ill run it again when i piut the ryzen back in, i dont have a spare usb to do the dos memtest, ill have to see if i can put it onto a disk

so my screen has just turned bright orange and crashed just like before and the reset button doesnt work i have to turn pc off and on again, i am now back on the onboard graphics everything was working fine until i put the ryzen back in, now its crashing with the a10 processor aswell now, so why has it worked for 2 weeks, with the a10 now its crashing with the a10, which means it prob is the graphics card with isnt even a year old yet

well i went back to defaults in bios, not sure if it done anything though but i didnt really want to be messing about with stuiff on the actual mb to clear it, but i have moved the ram into the 2 other slots, i have put the ryzen 7 back in and i have put the gpu in the other pci slot, and i have put the power management to 100%, done all that before 11 this morning, no problems so far, but we will have to see as the day progresses
