Hi all.

Curently driving an 03 impreza sti, had it for 18months now but its time to start saving for another house. So something a bit cheaper to run is required.

Im looking at getting a diesel of some sort, but something that looks good, is fairly nippy and is cheap-ish to run.

The one car im looking at that ticks all these boxes for me is the Mondeo ST TDCI, looks really good imo, can achieve 40mpg (over double my current mpg), is nippy, and because its a ford wont cost big money to service, also tax is a lot less than what im paying now.

Been having a browse on pistonheads and found one in performance blue, with 73k on the clock with a full stamped ford service history for £6980.

Do you think this would be a good choice? is there anything else i should be looking at apart from the mondeo? and are there anythings in particular i should look for when buying a st tdci?

Surely the tax is barely any cheaper than it is now?

How many miles a year to do you?

You realise there is a high chance it'll throw a £500-£1k injector or DMF bill at you, right?

I'd get a cheap petrol unless you do enough miles to make diesel worthwhile. The st tdci is a good car and fox is exaggerating by saying there's a high chance of a big bill, but they are definitely a possibility especially if it's not been looked after.

I do about 8500 a year at the moment.

How high chance are we talking about? will a mondeo st tdci deffinetly throw this bill up?

Would it be wise to check if this has been done already? and is there anyway to prevent it

What mileage does he need to do (roughly), to warrant going for the diesel over a petrol car?

It depends on the type of driving and times of day. If you are sensible with the right foot a decent petrol will deliver very reasonable mpg without the noise and hassle (turbo/injector/DMF) of a diesel equivalent.

For argument's sake, from my experience, I'd say anything round 18-20k a year, and the diesel starts making sense. This is about what I do and manage fine with my 330Ci.

Sure, a 330d would be cheaper on the fuel but not by a huge amount (at least not a difference that personally, I would say warranted the extra risk, increased initial outlay for an equivalent 'D' variant car, and the cost of a balaclava (required to hide from people as I drove by in my tractor ;) )

Get a 2.5 V6 Zetec-S or something.

I had a ganger for those on PH but it got me thinking if he was spending 7k.... Why not get the ST? There's even a 3.0 ZS on there, didn't realise such a thing existed

Why are you so obsessed with mpg? You do 7000 miles a year.

In a 28mpg petrol car this is a whole £108 a month in petrol.

In a 40mpg diesel this is £80 a month given the increasing differential in fuel cost.

Wow! Lets drive a clattery taxi instead of a decent performance car to save £28 a month.

£28 a month is a lot to some people remember fox, plus the lesser running costs for the st
