Possible SSD failing?

Hi guys,

Ok for the last 3 days it I've been downloading things off steam and they'd always queue after 10 -15%.
First day was downloading Wolfenstein TNO again, I always had to click play so it would update and continue downloading else it would just stay queued, had to do that like 15 times and 3 times when doing that windows crashed  Never once, EVER, since I built my pc have I ever had a crash, even a Windows crash, even with my overclocks, and that's been about 2yrs.
Eventually it downloaded, had 5 corrupt files and downloaded those with the queue thing happening most of the way through.
And today I downloaded Arma2, and had to do the above about 5 times before it downloaded. The games always said 'Download corrupt' while downloading.

I know it's been a long time with this SSD Samsung 840 EVO 250Gb and I have heard they do have a lifespan, so I just need to know if I should start backing things up (SSD used as OS with steam games, documents and all)

Games and stuff have been fine, but I'm kinda paranoid now, main drive dying is a nightmare for us all
And I've searched and all the steam queue errors are more than a year old, so can't be related especially since none of them mention windows crashing

Basically, is my SSD potentially dying?

Drive health is EXCELLENT! (The caps and exclamation mark are straight from the program)

Work time: 3321 hours
Powered on: 992 times

Estimated lifetime: 8 years 11 months 7 days which doesn't sound right for an SSD, Feb 2024 is when they say my drive should die with the amount I use it, and it's on pretty much most of the day

I'm just being paranoid really, but like I say I've never had a crash before until downloading off steam, and now since it's continuing to do that queue/download corrupt with every game I try download off steam it does make me worry as there are no recent posts of steam servers acting up

Have you run the performane restoration tool on the 840 ?

Currently they degrade over time which Samsung are trying to fix

Nope, haven't heard of that, but definitely sounds worth it. Thanks for that, the SSD is my baby in this machine so I really should take care of it.

Will let you know how it goes, and if it turns out steam is in chaos please let me know people

I had a similar thing with a Kingston SSD last year. SD life etc showed excellent but after every few reboots, Windows would do a scan disk, wouldn't boot or random files would get corrupted. Turned out the SSD was on it way out, thankfully Kingston gave me a new one under warranty. Never had a problem since.

I would run the restoration tool on the drive, can be downloaded from here

http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...tware/Samsung_Performance_Restoration_V11.zip

if you still have issues after running this tool you may need to do a secure erase to restore the full performance of the drive.

just so you are aware this may not fix the issue as some users still reported the same problem after doing the above and Samsung are meant to be releasing another new firmware for the 840 along with new magician software this month but doesn't look like that is going to happen as only two more days left but they are still working on a permanent fix
