as title, just wondering if these cards are too big for matx boards and the cases they go in?

got a friend who need a new machine, im trying to persuade him that he wants an sff over a lappy as he really needs gfx performance. im quite dissapointed with my m1530's gpu (8600mGT).

any suggestions re case and spec please for £1400

Y helo thar! :D

A gaming SFF eh? You've come to the right place. It's certainly possible to build a beast of a machine into a small form factor. I'm currenly about to order myself a new system, including a 4870.

The biggest trouble I had was with the case. Being smaller than full ATX, they don't have as good airflow as their bigger brethrent, so you have to be more careful with fan and cooling choice.

The following cases are all great for a SFF gaming machine, i've listed what fans they take.

Silverstone Sugo SG01 Evolution - 3x80mm
Silverstone Sugo SG03 - 2x120mm
Lian-Li V350 - 2x120mm and 1x80mm

There are others too, but IMO these three are the best. The build quality is top notch, and they look the dog's danglies.

As for CPU cooling, here it starts to get tricky. You're not going to get anything like a TRUE in there, or even close. The Sugo cases have just 78mm clearance, and the V350 doesn't fare much better, allowing around 120mm. This means you're restricted to things like the Zalman CNPS8700 and Silverstone NT06 in the Sugos, although i'm probably going for a Scythe Mini-Ninja in mine (V350) - it should just about fit.

Beyond that, spec as you would a full ATX - just remember that the motherboard needs to be microATX. Full graphics cards should not be a problem, although I believe in the SG01 you'll lose the HDD bay if the card is longer than 9.5" - but you can just mount it in the spare optical bay.

Okay rotters, let's throw down the basics.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail
Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK)
Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ)
Pioneer DVR-215BK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Asus Xonar DX 7.1 PCI-Express Sound Card (Low Profile Compatible) - Retail
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)

Leaves you needing a case, graphics card, and CPU cooler.

Graphics card will be an HD4870, I can't spec you that until tomorrow.

Case is down to your choice, but they're all around the same price. The cooler will depend on case choice.

£1400 is a LOT. The stuff above is £600, and even with the other bits I don't think you'll break a grand. You could get another 4GB RAM, upgrade to a Raptor HDD or a SSD if you're feeling flash. I'd recommend getting a nice big monitor with it though, or some Aego Speakers to really round out the Xonar card.

I love my Sugo SG-03, could even fit crossfire in that if you get a decent board. Loads of airflow.
With the layout of the case, i use the Silverstone NT-06 lite cooler and that sits right next to the 140mm fan of my Gigabyte Odin PSU, which does a great job of cooling it. Temps are around 35 degrees idle on my Q6600 at stock.

Depending on the urgency of the project, ATi is bringing out Laptops with a full speed external PCI-E 16x solution at some point, they might be worth looking into to give your friend a really flexible solution.

Thats a great start for me too - and if you have an hdmi amp, you can scrap the soundcard and feed the hd audio through the 4870 which might improve air flow a little in a small case

Might not be for everyone - but it could be worth considering

Thank you :)

i would recoment the v350b, its an awesome case and has very good build quality. Im gonna try and fir me a new 4870 in 1 tbh so let us no how u get on .

Another vote for the 350b Mines awesome! although it still doesnt have a working baord in it. (RMA :()

Such nice build quality, features, and space for my watercooling. :P
