Possible to Fold on AMD/ATI combo

I always usually just but ATI/AMD combos and I see that Nvidia/Intel seem to be the folding Weapons of choice

Is it still possible to fold with ATI kit and get decent results

Sorry if thats a Dumbass question but this folding actually interests me

I moved over my 5970's during the stomp monster event and was gettiing about 1.5-3k per gpu core compared to about 11-12k on a GTX460

Not a great result.

Not dumb at all, it is possible to fold ATI/AMD kit, but it gives less points per day (PPD) than Nvidia and intel, for example with GPUs 5850 ~ 5K ppd, GTX 460 ~ 12K ppd.

With CPUs the difference is not as great, but only the i7 can run the bigadv (the 6 core phenoms can but it needs some effort to do it) which is a lot more points.

So when people are buying gear mainly for folding they nearly always go for nvidia gpus as the points per £ and points per watt is much better. CPUs it's a bit different as the cost is more for i7 and many amd am2+ boards can have the bios upgraded to run the 6 core cpus so it is a cheaper option.

So if you've already got ati/amd kit you can fold on it no probs, but if you are building a rig from scratch intel/nvidia would be the way to go.
