I googled and its thousands of threads going from PC to TV but not the other way.

Is this possible? Essentially I upgraded my TV and have moved the old one to my study/nerd room. It's sat next to my PC (about 3 feet) and don't really want to buy all new AV equipment. Is it possible to use my 5.1 System for the PC with the TV? IE, do i need a particular sound card etc?

Any help appreciated.

Depends what audio outputs the TV has, but I'm guessing it will at least have one of the following: Optical, RCA audio (output not input), 3.5mm headphone socket.

If you are just using motherboard audio, then you can use RCA audio output or 3.5mm from the TV if it has either to the line in on the motherboard. If it has optical, then you can either get a sound card with optical in, or get a cheap DAC, which will output RCA, which can be connected to the motherboard line in.

If the TV does have optical, then getting a sound card with optical in will offer the best quality.
