Installed vista 64 ultimate on monday, liking it so far, but I find the constant disk access annoying, also the disk access causes the odd freeze when im gaming, which i cant really live with

Ive tried all the tips here to no avail http://mostlysavingmoney.com/top-10-windows-vista-speed-tweaks/

so do you guys have any other tips that might work?

ps dunno if its related, but when i was using xp, i bought a sata dvd burner, and my hard disk light started to flash at regular intervals, every second or so, but it didnt seem to cause any ill effects in gaming so i lived with it

thanks in advance for any help

The disk constantly accesses for the first days of running vista in order that it can index the hard drive. It's completely normal :)

Turn off the superfetch functionality. This worked for me and seems to be the main cuase of the disk activity from reading other forums.

Superfetch will reduce the disk thrashing at load up

however, it will hinder system performance some what and i'd personally be inclined to keep it on.

Also as posted above for the first few days of an install vista does thrash a lot - it will calm down

took my Vista x64 a few days to calm down - it was annoying at first, but now it's fine, searches are instant, and it boots faster than the fresh install :)

Looking at that list, with the USB Stick and Ready-boost..

Thats a complete waste of time unless you have low RAM.

Anything 2GB and over probably wont see any benefit at all.

512MB systems will for sure, but who is stupid enough to run Vista on 512MB?

Actually i bought a 4gb Flash voyager gt, and things seem a lot better, the freezes i was getting in game are more or less gone

I also did a fresh reinstall, because I had messed about a lot with my vista install, so Ive got to wait for vista to calm down again, but its looking promising so far (did a full backup aswell, nice ultimate feature)

Its crazy that i need 8gb combined ram to get close to how smooth xp was with 2gb though :)

The thing is, while I can see the benefit from something like Superfetch, it's just damn annoying when it starts reverse-caching like mad and basically makes the effective boot time for the OS much longer.

I've been running Vista for around 4 months and I must admit I'm getting tempted to try disabling Superfetch, as good as it sounds in theory. The odd bit of disk access here and there when loading apps seems preferable to huge lag outs.
