Have killed MB but have too much stuff on PC to make reinstall straight forward so is there any way to swap it out with either the same model or similar using Vista?

If your using the same model it should be fine, even a different model ith the same chipset should be ok.

Id probably do a reinstall if swapping from nvidia chipset to intel but thats just me :)

EDIT : You could reinstall vista on the same drive but choose the option leave current filesystem intact and it will install in a different folder.

Vista is much better than XP to handle motherboard changes without using Windows repair etc.

I changed from a 650 sli board to my new p35 board and didn't have to do anything. Vista just found new hard ware and if it didn't find the driver asked for them to be installed. Did have to activate Vista again after it but it was no biggie.

Went from an Asus Commando to an Asus Formula Maximus and windows wouldn't boot so I had to reinstall. It was quite an old install though (Vista x64 - 1yr old).

However, I then had to change back to the Commando due to the Maximus dying and that went fine, as did swapping the replacement Maximus back in when it arrived.

So I'd guess:-

Old install? Re-install likely.
New install? Re-install unlikely.

its possible but not reccomended

tbh its not hard to call microsoft up and get them to reactivate

Can swop no fuss.

I've had a P35, P45, and two X38's on my current Vista install without having to do a fresh install.

Vista will go a bit nuts detecting stuff first time you turn it on, just let it do its thing.

Restart.

Bung latest chipset drivers on.

Done.

I recently went from a Gigabyte GA X38 DQ6 with 2 x 36GB Raptors in RAID0, to an Asus P5Q Deluxe, with Vista 64bit, and didn't have any problems, even the RAID0 was recognised without any issues, did have to install 1 or 2 new drivers, but that was all....

Yeah I bounced back and forward between P35, X38 and P45 without reinstalling Vista. Sound and network drivers were the only things I had to reinstall, and that's simply because the different boards used different hardware for them.

Well i just changed my Intel P5GC-MX board to an Asus 780i board and it wouldnt boot to windows so had to do a fresh install

Im going to say a resounding YES to it working.

Iv done it from an intel based laptop to an amd based laptop and (with XP32) from my old opteron 148 system to a new core2 duo system :)
