Hey OcUK! Quick question - just built my new computer but at the moment I'm without an OS installation disc, but the HDD from my old disc has windows xp on it - is there any way to utilise that?

you can just plug it in, its best 2 do a format, it might work! just try it!

Yeah I tried it and the hard drive shows up in the BIOS but asks me if I want to go into safe mode, and whichever option I choose, it goes blank for a while, and reboots...

I have a load of files on there that I want to access at some point, so formating is out of the question.

And yay I'm claimed!

As long as you have an install disk you could try a Windows repair, it keeps your existing files but re-installs the components needed to get it running (in the case of changing motherboard chipset or processor).

Closest I have to that is a recovery disc, which is just ignored when I put it into my external floppy disc drive.

I do have another new HDD, which I'm hoping to get an OS onto eventually, but I was hoping for a short term fix...

You cant use a os that was installed on a differnt system.

And if it does work you will have loads of problems.

You need to install an operating system on the system your gonna use it on.

if im right that is what you were asking.

So you need to get an installation CD and run that.

Yup that's basically what I wanted to know :)

Guess I'm gonna have to wait until I get that OS. Cheers OC!
