Managed to snap the retention clip off the PCI Express slot with my 6970 last night whilst trying to get to the SATA ports to install a new SSD, now the display wont work....
At first it started screeching, which turned out to be a knocked out power cable (one of them is power socket -> 2x molex, which are extensions/daisy chains from other devices - should I be concerned about this??)
Now everything is plugged back in, I get just a black screen and no screeching. For now Im using on-board VGA, so at least the mobo and everything else looks fine...
Im going to try connecting the GPU directly to the PSU with dedicated cables later to see if that works, then might try the next PCI Express slot, but if all else fails, is a 7970 generally considered the best upgrade, bang for buck wise?
I play mostly BF3 these days, with maybe a bit of Tomb Raider/Alan Wake/GTA 4
