Hey guys!!

I own a Soundblaster Zx with a Sennheiser Game One headset. Im looking to upgrade my sound system, I mainly only play games with the odd film thrown in. I was just wondering if any of you kind souls have a possible upgrade route you wouldnt mind sharing? Ill pay anything upto 500 pound

Thankyou all, I am terrible at understanding the sound side of gaming so any help will be greatly appreciated

Agreed. You have a good gaming sound setup they. Any money you spent would be moving sideways if your focus is games.

Yep, that's very good headset.
Of which there are very limited selection.
Again if you're not actually using/needing that mic then there's lot wider selection.

I went from a Zx to a GSX1000.

I would say there was no appreciable difference in sound quality. What the GSX1000 does give you is a much easier method to switch between speakers and headphones for the audio output.

If you only ever use headphones, then I don't think there's any value at all in that change.

I highly recommend the GSX1000. The DAC is comparable to the Zx, but the surround virtualization is much better. GSX 1000 uses a filter to convert surround sound into emulated binaural recording, and binaural recording (NOT binaural beats) attempts to record in such a way that emulates how your ears actually hear. Good binaural recordings seems like you are actually listening to the audio in real life. Here are some examples: 1 2

I have compared to real 7.1 setups and binaural recordings on good headphones are even better than comparable 7.1/Atmos setups, in my opinion. The only thing that's missing is the bass.

My friend says a GSX1000 would be the way to go? Any thoughts on that please?
Not worth it at current price level for the hardware it has...
Or really doesn't have, because its DAC and headphone amp are at level of phones/tablets instead of genuinely above standard level.
DAC being actually level worser than in Sound Blaster Z/Zx. (though human hearing isn't really accurate for that)
You wouldn't pay the price of Jaguar/Rolls Royce from Morris Mini, or would you?

Sound BlasterX G6 Creative is selling as B-stock at £70 has lot better DAC and actual headphone amplifier good for most headphones you could buy.

If it MUST be a sound/headphone upgrade I'd look into the Audeze Mobius.

Planar Magnetic headphones are on another level, those that haven't tested them (which is unsurprising as they're generally costly) cannot understand the precision or depth of audio, more so when it comes to bass management and accuracy I would say. I'm simplifying things a little but the Mobius is absolutely worth taking a look at and can be had for around £300-400 last I checked.

The real problem is finding stock anywhere, and I'd advise you test or audition the products for any sort of purchase in this vein or value to begin with.

MLE's guide on Head-Fi is worth using as a resource, and it includes a review of the aforementioned Mobius:

My friend has also recommended this amp? Thoughts anyone please for gaming?

That actually lacks that esssential digital to analog conversion (DAC) part and would need analog signal source...
And while possible to use with motherboard's integrated or current sound card, there's no sense in getting RPG (and I don't mean game genre but that Russian weapon) to kill a fly.
Because output power of that is really approaching level of multimedia speakers, which aren't strapped few centimeters from your ear drums.

How about virtualization, is that very much improved being binaural?
That's another marketing quackery term.
