I want to be able to play cod4 at high frame rates competatively so that means reduction in quality and cost of performance.

I obviously want to be able to play new games but arent fussed on how well the graphics look as i compete and want to see the enemy first rather than how good the game looks.

I want to upgrade with the cheapest method atm
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.53Ghz
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP SLI (939)
HIS X850 XT PE 580 / 621 (Shader model 2.0 sux for compat)
Corsair i think 2GIG PC 3200
Thermaltake PSU 480W
Thermaletake x5000? case, i just know its OLD AND WAAY 2 HEAVY!

Cheap upgrade please sometime soon but not immediately, depending how cod4 runs in multiplayer at low settings

the cheapest price possible that will gain the best performance, also - will getting rid of my amd 4000+ for an x3800 dual core be better? if so how? (Gaming purposes)

And do the 8800GT' work on 480w psu? thought it was like 500+ min? - same applies to what the guy above me said about pci-e 2.0 or wotever that is (my system is pci express btw)

How can i check what rail? my PSU is? I know its a thermaltake 480w psu

When i say cheapest i mean best price/performance on lowish settings used at cod4 really, cod4 is going to be my main game and i will stay away from crysis, Unreal tournament 3 is also going to be another. ATM i run both on low and am satisfied

I dont want to fork out £200 for a graphics card thats going to last no better than an x1850 on games such as cod4 when graphics are turned down.
Obviously not but i mean there could be 10/20fps difference and both games could be showing 100+ fps so the difference would be minimal if you know what i mean. Not the best example but you get what i mean.

I.E I could have bought an amd 3xxx? and x800 and would have had exactly the same gaming experience especially if i OVERCLOCKED because the MHZ would be similar/same and fps off the graphics cards is extremely minimal

I.E COD2 i get 125 fps but cant get 250 stable so an x800 gets 125 stable which i play on ;)

Sorry for the essay i hope it helps you understand, COD4 is my main priority then UNREAL 3 then nothing afaik

Power supply good enough?

Is there another way 2 check, i popped the side of my case off and its just got thermaltake xaser on the side and where the output INSIDE my case theres 3 stickers but nothing useful.

How else can i check what the volt/rails are?

Its definately a thermaltake butterfly 480w psu

Also - surely a 4000+ 2.5ghz cpu will be just as good as an 3800 dual core? i cant get any other than a 3800 becase my board is 939

Thnx and u said, This is not good for ATX 2.x motherboards is the gigabyte ga k8nxp-sli a ATX 2.x mobo?

Also, i still dont understand the question of, how an upgrade to an fx 5x or dual core 3800 would IMPROVE my system compare to the cost, i understand a graphics card would but like i said, price / performance gain i am after.

I can even wait until around christamas time i think before i will upgrade unless i am just buying a graphics card

£200

So will my psu run the new 8800gt? ideally i would just buy an 8800 gt for my x850 if its going to run cod2 and unreal 3 fine!

£200 or so maybe?

Between now and xmas time depending on how well my current machine runs cod4 and unreal 3 when the proper games are owt
