Possible upgrade options for COD4?

I want to be able to play cod4 at high frame rates competatively so that means reduction in quality and cost of performance.

I obviously want to be able to play new games but arent fussed on how well the graphics look as i compete and want to see the enemy first rather than how good the game looks.

I want to upgrade with the cheapest method atm
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.53Ghz
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP SLI (939)
HIS X850 XT PE 580 / 621 (Shader model 2.0 sux for compat)
Corsair i think 2GIG PC 3200
Thermaltake PSU 480W
Thermaletake x5000? case, i just know its OLD AND WAAY 2 HEAVY!

Cheap upgrade please sometime soon but not immediately, depending how cod4 runs in multiplayer at low settings

PCI-e 2.0 is backward-compatible with PCI-e 1.0 and 1.1. If the GT only worked with PCI-e 2.0 boards they'd really be shooting themselves in the foot since the only PCI-e 2.0 chipset available is X38.

the cheapest price possible that will gain the best performance, also - will getting rid of my amd 4000+ for an x3800 dual core be better? if so how? (Gaming purposes)

And do the 8800GT' work on 480w psu? thought it was like 500+ min? - same applies to what the guy above me said about pci-e 2.0 or wotever that is (my system is pci express btw)

the card will work in that motherboard as Billy said.

You will notice a difference from running two cores as latest games are optimized to use threading, which makes use of both processors.

I've had a 4400+ with a 8800GTX combination for about a year.. BioShock runs at 1920x1200 with highest settings no problems. I've only changed because the processor failed on me.

the cheapest price possible that will gain the best performance...
This is chasing a dream though. If you are seeking "the best performance" you'll always end up spending obscene amounts of money. You should be looking to optimize the price vs performance curve, to put in in mathematical terms.

I agree with whats been posted above. Get the 8800gt plus an x2 CPU. What do you mean by cheapest possible? you could just get an x1950pro for £70 that will play games faster than your current card but will be nowhere near as good as whats been suggested above. And nowhere near as future proof.

I tried the CoD4 demo using an X2 3800 and the game stuttered badly. OK, the vid card is only a 6800 256Mb but I lowered the res down to 640x480 and it was still poo.
Would an 8800GT make that much of a difference? BTW, it was the same with the Crysis demo too

I do plan on a major upgrade in the early part of the new year but I had to see how and if my PC performed with new releases.

How can i check what rail? my PSU is? I know its a thermaltake 480w psu

When i say cheapest i mean best price/performance on lowish settings used at cod4 really, cod4 is going to be my main game and i will stay away from crysis, Unreal tournament 3 is also going to be another. ATM i run both on low and am satisfied

I dont want to fork out £200 for a graphics card thats going to last no better than an x1850 on games such as cod4 when graphics are turned down.
Obviously not but i mean there could be 10/20fps difference and both games could be showing 100+ fps so the difference would be minimal if you know what i mean. Not the best example but you get what i mean.

I.E I could have bought an amd 3xxx? and x800 and would have had exactly the same gaming experience especially if i OVERCLOCKED because the MHZ would be similar/same and fps off the graphics cards is extremely minimal

I.E COD2 i get 125 fps but cant get 250 stable so an x800 gets 125 stable which i play on ;)

Sorry for the essay i hope it helps you understand, COD4 is my main priority then UNREAL 3 then nothing afaik

im on an X2 3800 (939) cpu and x1900 xt 512 gpu, ran the demo pretty much bag on with max details. To say i was shocked was an understatement, never did get round to seeing performance with lower settings because it looked too pretty. Same for the UT3 demo :) Thats all on stock too mind.

I'd listen to huddy if you want to do it cheaply.

Power supply good enough?

Is there another way 2 check, i popped the side of my case off and its just got thermaltake xaser on the side and where the output INSIDE my case theres 3 stickers but nothing useful.

How else can i check what the volt/rails are?

Its definately a thermaltake butterfly 480w psu

Also - surely a 4000+ 2.5ghz cpu will be just as good as an 3800 dual core? i cant get any other than a 3800 becase my board is 939

The best picture I can find is this:

It looks like it says 40A on +5, 30A on +3.3, and 15A on +12. This is not good for ATX 2.x motherboards since they feed the CPU and graphics from the 12V rail rather than the 5V or 3.3V rails as was done in the past.

Socket 939 X2s were made up through X2 4800+. You could look for one of those. You could also see if you could find a reasonably priced FX57, the most powerful CPU available on 939.

Thnx and u said, This is not good for ATX 2.x motherboards is the gigabyte ga k8nxp-sli a ATX 2.x mobo?

Also, i still dont understand the question of, how an upgrade to an fx 5x or dual core 3800 would IMPROVE my system compare to the cost, i understand a graphics card would but like i said, price / performance gain i am after.

I can even wait until around christamas time i think before i will upgrade unless i am just buying a graphics card

£200

So will my psu run the new 8800gt? ideally i would just buy an 8800 gt for my x850 if its going to run cod2 and unreal 3 fine!

£200 or so maybe?

Between now and xmas time depending on how well my current machine runs cod4 and unreal 3 when the proper games are owt
