Possible Upgrade?

Good evening everyone. My current rig is as follows...

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150
Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X 4096MB GDDR5
Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gbs Basic
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache
Corsair Vengeance C70 Midi Tower Gaming Case
Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)

Since my upgrade last year I haven't really struggled to run anything (excluded of course games that were poorly made) but I have a hunch that a lot of stuff is coming that will demand slightly more muscle and I am thinking a couple of quid now might put me out in front of that a little.

I am keen to put another 8GB of Ram in, but I cannot find the exact same ram on sale anywhere, and if memory serves correctly it's not wise to mix ram if possible (again, apologies if this is not accurate). I am also thinking now might be as good of a time as any to make the leap to Windows 10 (I mean it's free and seems fairly popular).

My graphics card is still mean and keen but again and I cannot escape the niggle that its soon going to left in the dust. This card was my first ATI card and I have been REALLY happy with it but it seems like NVIDIA might be a safer bet now? I dunno, probably being silly but I always like to ask the kind folks on this forum for advice should I feel the need to update and upgrade.

As always any advice would be great, thank you kindly in advance.

Kind Regards,

Tonytank

If I were you I'd stick with what you have for now, assuming you're gaming at 1080p. Wait for Pascal later this year if you want to upgrade your GPU as the 290 is still a great card (I have one in one of my machines)

If you want to upgrade something now why not get a bigger SSD as 120gb is a bit limiting nowadays.

That Ram would work with what I already have? Or would it just be more prudent to buy 16Gb of what you mentioned and sell whats in Gertrude right now?

Ok. I am sure I have been told more than once that mixing and matching ram is usually a bad idea but to be fair the only difference here seems to be the color. I can live with that.

assuming you're gaming at 1080p

I am indeed. I have no real desire to go over 1920x1080 until it becomes slightly more cost effective.

Sorry for the revival of an old thread, but I have decided on my upgrade now.

So for quick refresher he is my current set up...

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150
Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X 4096MB GDDR5
Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gbs Basic
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache
Corsair Vengeance C70 Midi Tower Gaming Case
Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)

I am upgrading the graphics card to one of these...

And then putting this in...

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...nnel-kit-tlred38g2400hc11cdc01-my-061-tg.html

To bring me up to 16GB.

Any suggestions or tips please feel free to let me know..

You get some extra performance in DX11 games that favour Nvidia but nothing anything close to £300 worth and you drop a lot of Vulcan and DX12 performance.

You would be down grading from a DX12 card to a DX11.

You could in theory upgrade to a 1440p monitor with that 290, if the numbers I'm reading are right you could be getting 40+ fps at that res with that card. With that in mind, get the bigger SSD(s) and maybe the RAM.

Well, I have gone ahead and ordered the 1070 so that has really got things going now. Just a few more questions.

I want to check one more time, the ram I currently have is in the link below...

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...hannel-kit-tlaed38g2400hc11cdc-my-052-tg.html

Which of course isn’t available any more so I was recommended the ram below to bring things up to 16GB...

My question is, because I am stupidly nervous about this sort of thing, will this ram place nice with the ram I currently have? I don’t want to order it and then find out it’ll cause all sorts of monkey shines!

Secondly now I have the 1070 will my power supply hold up? It’s a Sapphire Pure 625W Modular Power Supply. Will that be enough?

Thanks in advance for all the help. It’s massively appreciated.

That RAM should be fine. Looks like same DIMM with different heat spreader. Its never 100% but i would not image you'll get issues.

625W should be ok. looks like its spread across three rails but the 1070 sips power so should be good i think.

Thanks for the advice mate. I will go ahead and order the ram now.

I am a bit on the fence about Windows 10 now. I cant really think of a reason one way or another with it. I would love to play Gears 4 but I can see that winding up on Steam before long.

It's a thinker. I currently have no issues with 7 so why rock the boat?
