Possible Virus?

Hi All,

Well I have bitten the bullet and decided to ask for help! Usually i can sort most problems out.

I'm not sure whether I have a virus or not.

I installed some software and since then I have had a few problems, I'm not convinced its a coincidence, lol. I installed officedock, and works perfectly. Got the software from a mate who has it on their PC and has no problems.

Any way the problem is when i click the shortcut [on desktop, startbar etc]for firefox, it tells me the application is not found [e.g link broken]. So i went to the installation folder and the .exe for firefox is not there. Strange. So i reinstalled it. It works. I run AVG, windows defender. AVG finds some threats, and i delete these, windows defender finds nowt.

So i click on outlook to view my mails. Vista says it cant find a MSVCR80.dll file. So i click word, doesnt work, but just says it wont load.

I repair office from control panel and now works.

I click firefox, the shortcut dont work! So i check the installation folder and the .exe is not there! OMG!

So i reinstall firefox, it works. Coincidently the personal settings and bookmarks etc are all still in the firefox folder.

Another problem is that, now when i go to play a avi file it just plays sounds! So i think somewhere codec has been deleted. I installed the vista codec pack and divx and all worked again. Then last night i tried and the player couldnt load the correct codec to show video!

This keeps happening, and each time i run AVG or defender it finds nowt. Tonight i will be running CCleaner, Bitdefender and Malware Bytes Anti-Malware later tonight, along with a hijack this report.

Any way, any one heard of a virus which deletes firefox and perhaps deletes .dll files for Office??? Seems rather strange, i would have thought a virus would want to do more damage [ i suppose it may have done, i just havent found what] haha.

I dont really want to be re-installing vista, but wondered if any one had any advice etc? And not just, reinstall XP instead of Vista. :)

Cheers

Si

Honestly just sounds like some odd incompatibility issues to me. What is it that AVG detected the first time round? Also, with Vista, don't you have to give third-party applications permission to make changes to your pc? Are you sure you haven't denied access to system structure (i sound like an old person trying to be hip. i just need to add the words Wizard and Matrix), which might be resetting your settings?

When you add FF to the install path, then it's gone again, what happens in between? Do you reboot or is it just over a period of time?

It sounds like you're at the start of your new install. Honestly, i'd start over before you start filling it with important stuff. Do it step by step and try and work out where your problem is. This is my install sequence:

OS
Defrag
Drivers
Defrag
Windows Updates
Defrag
Antivirus/Firewall
Replacement Software (Winamp/Foobar, FireFox, Thunderbird)
Everything else (Office, Games etc)

It definately only happened when you instaleld Officedock? Try getting Officedock from somewhere else, a demo or whatever, and using the serial you have. Tried uninstalling officedock altogether and doing Virus related activities?

Edit: What kind of Vista install are you doing? Is it a legitimate copy of Vista? (you dont have to answer that, but consider what effects a dodgy copy may have) Is it a vLited copy of Vista? Stripping out core components in vLite or nLite can often lead to a whole host of structure problems. (I currently cant install anything on my GF's Eee PC because Xp refuses to run .exe's! Something i did in nLite but i'm ballsed if i know what).

Need more details!

Thanks DampCat, could well be compatibility issues. Actually i'll check the settings on the DEP, to see if that has any thing to do with it, as i did mess about with that, i forgot about that.

When firefox disappears, i dont reboot, sometimes its an hour later sometimes 10 mins, i dont reboot, just keep it running, its very odd.

Its not a new install, i built it beginning of the year, so is fully loaded, haha. :)

It defo started happening when i installed officedock, yes. So I think its defo that.

Good idea about removing office doc, and using the serial i have, i'll give that a go tonight.

Vista64 i am using is a genuine copy bought from OCUK i think.

Yeah i'd start by removing Officedock and trying to rescue it from there. If things remain how they are now, try a different version of Officedock from a demo or freeware if it exists, then stick in your serial to unlock it. If it still borks, then i'd think about leaving officedock. try some alternatives perhaps.

Good luck!

I'm guessing we might be referring to Objectdock......and if we are using a 'liberated' version of it - who knows what might happen?

;)

Haha, your rights its objectdock haha. :)

Jesus i cant even get the name right!

cheers dampcat, i'll have a "fiddle", and see if i can sort it out.
