Hi, I have a problem on my PC and I'm looking for some informed opinion on what the fault is. Apologies for the length of this, but I want to show what I've done so far.
PC Spec:
Q6600 @ 3Ghz
Asus Maximus Formula X38 m/b
8GB RAM
XFX HD 5850
Vista Home Premium 64 bit
running catalyst 10.10 drivers
Fault:
Last night (30/11) whilst playing COD MW2 I experienced what I think are described as "artifacts" (graphics seem to be ripped across the screen, flickers) followed by a full screen of a chequer like pattern. System hung like this. I did a hard restart and PC did not post, no beeps, no video output. On checking the LCD poster on my M/B was stuck on VGA BIOS. It was late, so I switched it off and left it there.
This morning tried switching PC on, same problem. LCD poster shows RAM check and CPU check then hangs on VGA BIOS check, no beeps no video output, no HDD activity.
Got in from work this evening and switched machine on, get video output and message that my overclock had failed (overclock has been running pretty much 24x7 for the best part of 2.5 years with no problem) and press F1 to enter the BIOS. Reloaded my O/C profile, booted machine straight into Windows. Checked Windows event logs, can see no obvious problem.
Ran the FurMark stability test, after around 10 seconds machine crashed in a very similar way to when it crashed last night whilst playing MW2. Another hard restart and the PC fails to boot, stuck again at the VGA BIOS.
Reseated HD5850, and PC booted into Windows, no issues. Ran Prime Blend test for 20/30 minutes, no errors and temps ok. Ran FurMark stability test, got "artifacts" pretty much straight away, then crashed in a familiar fashion after 30 seconds (I timed it !). Hard restart, won't boot, stops at VGA BIOS again. Disconnected power, reconnected, still won't boot, same problem.
I then swapped the HD5850 into my other 16x PCIe slot. Won't boot, stops at VGA BIOS in LCD poster. Checked power to card, fan is spinning so I assume it's ok.
I then remove HD5850 altogether, machine seems to post ok but obviously can't see anything. The LCD poster goes past the VGA BIOS and displays the time (my default setting) as it would when the machine POSTS. I reinstall the HD5850 into the origional PCIe slot, will not boot, no video, same problem as before. Reset BIOS on switch on M/B, still same problem.
At the moment I cannot get the machine to boot and it gets stuck at the VGA BIOS. Unfortunately I have no other PCIe video card to test with. I sold my 8800GTX a couple of months ago
I'm of the opinion that the XFX HD5850 card has a fault, but I obvioulsy cannot prove this for now.
What does anyone think ?
Cheers
Lee.
