Hey guys - I'm upgrading my computer. How is this:

Thanks

Whats the main use of the system, if its for gaming your better off going for the i5 builds that would save you some cash to spend on better parts.
Not theres any thing wrong with whats listed :)

seriously im sick of reading peoples posts saying "get the i5 for gaming you wont see an improvement" really? i know that like everyone else who is interested knows that but if a dude wants an i7 for gaming let him get an i7 its his money, he can get what he wants. its common knowledge now that the i7 is roughly the same performance as an i5 in gaming so please stop telling people to get an i5 over an i7 if they originally want the i7.

I know it's their money, but we're advising them to get the i5 for a reason - so the saved money could be spent on a better graphics card or motherboard etc...

Imo the i7 gives a slight improvement in games that are CPU dependant ~+5%, and as the OP is using it for more than gaming then stick with the i7.

Yes and not everyone knows this, the advice is for the benefit of the buyer, not because we WANT everyone to have an i5.

You'd just be wasting money which could be better spent elsewhere. In this case though since the OP is a software engineer an i7 would benefit him greatly.
Contribute something to the thread next time.

Also I believe I'm correct in saying the Vertex 4 has almost double the write speed over the M4 due to its latest firmware and it's only a few £ extra.

i understand you are being friendly and giving advice mate, and i wasn't having a go at you or anyone its just common knowledge now because everyone says it. and if the guy wants an i7 whats not to say he doesn't already have the money for top end GPU's? so he doesn't have to save money. if i could have afforded it i would have gone for an i7 instead of the 5 but im a nerd and i like to have the best gear but as you said the i5 performs more or less the same so im happy anyway. ive seen a hell of a lot of performance boost from my old AMD 955BE thats for sure.
