couple of months ago my computer had a meltdown, ended up putting a new mobo and graphics card into it. seemed to work. after the first use i get a message telling me windows is fake. ok, updated, rearranged memory (added another 2, taking me from 6 to 8), retry, ok works. next time i turn it on, fake again. ok i can deal with this, not a problem. nothing major going on.

what i can't deal with is the fact it now randomly crashes with unknown exception errors and messages about referenced memory, can't be written/read, etc. the errors seem to vary and it happens randomly but always after it has been on for a couple of hours, i can sit and play me3 for an hour fine, if i go longer it plays up. i thought it was gaming but then just now it did it whilst uninstalling photoshop, and frankly it seems to do it as and when it wants. no consistency to the cause or the errors. is it possibly the hard drive? it's about 4 years old, could be done.

also, after a while, when the problems start, random keys will stick like i will be typing and aaaaaaaall of a suddddddden things like thiiiis start to happen. the cpu temp is running at around 55 average, graphics at 38 (when not playing anything). so i don't think it is that. i dunno. pretty soon i will have replaced every part of the machine and just wished i'd bought a new one.

any ideas?

hmm...no actually i wasn't aware i needed to restore windows after. i guess i can. it's probably due one. never been formatted that i recall. i guess i'll give that a try.

so basically just run a factory reset and the system should...in theory...'align' itself with the new hardware when it sets up? guess i'll need a new external drive to save all my por....files....

well. formatted. did all my windows uppppppppppppppppppppdates. stiill doing it. as youuu can see from my lovely typing. also it crashes after abouuuut an hour of doing stuff, but no errors. just a flat out crash.

all new parts, the card and ram from ocuk. the mobo was from ebay to be fair. like i said earlier, still not getting hot or anything. just the temp mentioned in OP. and it doesn't matter what i'm doing, gaming, updates, or sitting idle.

edit- well, the last crash was while origin was downloading ME3. it said 'origin application error' but there was no error message, just an empty white box.

is it possibly a ram issue? i notice i'm only running about half of what i have, maybe it is gradually decreasing to the point of a crash? i don't know what would cause that....especially now that it is formatted...i even put a new 2gb from ocuk in to put the 6 up to 8

edit- last crash just went total black screen. that's new.

i just sat and watched the memory over the hour it was on and it does gradually decrease all the way down to 1 until it drops under and crashes. i have no idea what would cause that. there is barely anything running.

you think i should check the bios to see if it is running at the wrong setting? problem is i don't know what it SHOULD be at :D

You missed a few bits.

Mobo make and model
Memory make and model
Rinse and repeat for all components

i can try and get all those, i'll open it up again

what i seem to have worked out is it is leaking memory all over the place. various screenshots and programs i've run show i go from about 7 to 1 over the hour, quicker when doing stuff, and it is throwing loads into the cache fast. i do flushdns and run a cache clearing thing etc, then check again and i get some memory back, but only up to about 4 and it starts cacheing (caching?) again. but i watch the process list and i can't see anything draining memory or processes, because i've just formatted it there is barely anything running anyway....very strange.

Ah well after formatting it doesn't tell me it is fake anymore. That was just a dumb issue that happena aometimes with new hardware. My copy is definitely lefit5.

...well...problem seems solved. at least it worked perfectly fine last night.

i showed my friend my bios screen and he said disable that 1394 socket. so i did. and then my memory sat at a nice 6gb for 4 hours straight, even through several games of ME3.

so...that was...weird
