Possibly Upgrading Comp

Hey all, first post and all that.

I am currently running this:

AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+
Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire
2gb Corsair XMS DDR, cant remember the exact model but its 333mhz
Asus Xonar D2 7.1
XFX ATI Radeon HD4870 1gb
Enermax Galaxy 850w PSU
Couple of generic 500gb IDE HD's
CDRW/DVD-RW and one of those Sony Blue-Ray players that were on offer a few weeks back.

and it's getting a bit long in the tooth now, so thinking its time to upgrade. Although im comfortable building the thing, I'm not exactly confident in my skills enough to attempt any overclocking, and also a bit behind the times as I haven't really looked into this too much lately, so I was thinking of one of the overclocked bundles here, possible this one:

Along with the sound card, graphics card and PSU, maybe with some extra ram to fully benefit from Vista x64, and some Sata HD's.

Any thoughts or opinions?
 
Yeah, that bundle would be a great upgrade. Although you may be able to clock it youself easily, a moderate clock can be gained from increasing the multi on the X3 720

yep, got a copy of vista 64. Had it for this PC pretty much when it came out but because of all the problems I never used it. If im rebuilding it now, I thought I might aswell give it a go.

Budget, not really thought about, probably £500-£600, can be pushed up a little if something outstanding is available.

Out of curiousity, and probably something I should ask on the HD forum, whats the point of a tiny SSD? Just for the OS and then Games/Music/Vids and things on the HD? Do they really make that much of a difference?

the SSD would be for the OS and games.
All backups, data (music, movies etc) would be stored on the Large hard drive.

and yeah they make a difference during gameplay and OS loading times.
 
But surely once the OS is installed there would be hardly any room left? (haven't a clue how big a windows installation is these days but can't imagine they are that small)

Just eyeing up a bigger SSD and smaller HD, as I have an 500gb external NAS drive and two laptops with 360gb between them for extra space also.

vista is typically, (well mine is) after the usual stuff is installed, firefox etc...10Gigs, xp 6gigs

if there is no need for the Large HDD if you feel you will be fine with the NAS 500gig then how about something like this..

32Gb SSD is pretty pointless imo, you'll get your os on and maybe a game. Be better off with a couple of bigger sata drives.
 
Yeah, most games these days are over 6gb in size, I'm running an 80gb HDD with 7games, XP and drivers, and I'm already short of space (3gb left =[)

Getting a 500gb soon xD
 
Think i'd prefer to get a half decently sized sata going, i'm sure an SSD would be quicker, but im not really bothered about a few seconds quicker boot up to vista, and games seem pretty quick to me now as it is. Guess i'm getting old and can't notice the slow downs anymore!

Only thing holding me back is the ram on the O/C bundle, the reviews don't seem great and i'm wondering if I should take the plunge and do it myself with possibly better ram, and maybe mobo. Would the ram really be as dodgy as the buyers reviews seem?
