With operating systems loading quicker and quicker these days from cold boots, it is coming to the point where posting takes a significant percentage of the boot time.

What affects the speed of the post time? Does it change between motherboards? Any way to decrease the time it takes to post?

This is one of the advantages of UEFI a faster boot time. I believe for Windows 8 certification a UEFI bios must load and start booting the OS in 2.5 seconds. I think with the latest APTIO core ami have achieved this.

My POST literally takes 0.2 seconds and then proceeds to load Windows (which takes 5-8 seconds to get to my desktop from there).

My post was almost non existent (you sometimes got a glimpse of it) on my old DDR2 motherboard with a Q6600 processor so I doubt it's anything to do with the motherboard or processor.
