POST problem "DET DRAM"

I am building a new machine with an Asus Maximus and OcUK Memory (had to change the MB after my first choice Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R arrived faulty and took chance to upgrade). The system will not POST. LCD Error is "DET DRAM". I read on the forums that this may be due to low RAM Voltage but if I cannot get to BIOS how do I adjust the voltage?

Memory is from OverClockers UK and I think the manufacturer is Elixir with specs;
- PC8500 1066MHz CAS 5-5-5-15
- 240pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
- 6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
- 2.0V-2.3V Power Supply

I have tried all the slots and trimmed down my DIMM's from 4*1GB to just 1 (in various slots) and I get the same message. Do you think the problem is the stock Motherboard RAM Voltage of 1.9V? If it is, is there any way I can change it without getting into the BIOS?

I do have an old Dell PC with very early DDR2 RAM. Is that likely to survive being cranked up to 1.9V? If so I could try it in the Maximus but I do not want to try it if it will fry.

Any help gratefully received....

Use the old memory. The board will be defaulting to 1.8v and that will be exactly what the older memory will need. Just ensure that the Dell ram is DDR2 and not DDR because it is possible to 'force' it to fit.
Set the memory voltage to whatever the new default is supposed to be and then save the BIOS and shutdown Replace the memory and try again.

Thanks Guys.

Made some progress tonight. Did as recommended and stuck the old DDR2 Dell Memory (circa 2003 running at 200Mhz) and got the machine to boot. Managed to get to the BIOS and was able to get to the appropriate voltage control menus (but annoyingly they only appear after setting other menus to manual which took me a while to figure out).

I can now boot the machine with "old" memory or both old and new menu mixed together.

Now the problem that I have is that although I have set DRAM to 2.0V, if I take the old memory out I get back to the "DET DRAM" problem again. If I put the old memory back then I get it to boot again and the combined memory is detected.

So, do I need to change more than just the DRAM parameter? Do I need to change the DDR2 Channel parameters as well or have I just not changed DRAM enough?

Apologies in advance for my ignorance and any help gratefully received.

After trying 2.1v and maybe 2.2v you may want to test the new memory in a second PC before considering an RMA on it.

You should try booting with just one stick but most new Asus boards struggle with 1066 memory. Mine will run 2gb of it but not more so I went back to 800mhz to run my 4gb.

I think I may be doing something wrong! I get to the BIOS (version 0401) and change the DRAM Voltage in the Extreme Tweaker. Save settings and then exit. When I bring the BIOS back up the settings are set at what I change them to in Extreme Tweaker (the 2.1V) as advised) but when I look in the Power Menu it shows the DRAM Voltage at 1.872V.

With this set up I can put all the 1066Mhz RAM in any slot but the machine will not POST unless there is one of the 200 Mhz DDRs's in one of them. Every time I remove the 200Mhz it stalls at DET DRAM (and also does the same if I restart without turning off the PSU).

I read the Asus Maximus thread with some considerable jealousy as no-one else seems to be having these problems.

Looks like that board has individual setting for each memory bank. Check the manual for the corrct way to set the memory to manual and then choose your voltages.
Try setting AI Overclock Tuner to manaul and see if other settings become available.

I now have exactly the same problem. This is my second board and second set of memory. The board will not post with Ballistix 6400 or Geil 6400.

I also have the same problem as you Beckett, Ballistix PC6400 here (and all my m8s have Geil lol)

:(

Looks like I need some cheap crap mem in order to update the bios...

I've decided to RMA my second board as well. Really seems like a lottery to get a board that will even POST to the BIOS.

Is it really that bad? No joys in getting it to POST at all?

(also did you get your board from OcUK like me? Just wondering if it'll be a batch)

No I had to go to a different supplier becuase it was before OCUK got them in.

My first board work for a few hours before dying and never posted again, second board was dead on arrival.

JediFragger,

Could you tell me exactly what you changed in the BIOS? I havre some very old crap memory that I can get to the BIOS with and all my RAM Sticks are recognised so long as one of the old DDR2 200Mhz's is sat there alongside them. But, no matter what I change in BIOS it does not seem to do the trick of getting the 1066's through a POST when sat without the old 200's.
