I would be gratefull if anyone could shed some light on the following problem i am having with my PC at the moment

It doesnt allways get past the post screen most of the time it will post the info for the processor and sit there idle and not do anything else, but after a while if i'm persistant enough maybe 10 or 11 times of pressing reset or taking the side panel off and have a fiddle with the connections inside it will eventually post all the info memory ide sata etc and then load into windows.

Although when windows loads past the welcome screen its just completly blank so i have to hold down the windows key press l to log on click on my profile then the desktop will appear (weird!!!) but this does not happen all the time only one in a while.

the spec of the PC is as follows

AMD sandiego 3700 @ stock with a gigabyte cooler pro pcu21-vg
1 gig Geil Dual channel DDR @ 400mhz
120gig maxtor sata drive
DVD ide drive
DVD-RW ide drive
Xfi sound blaster audigy 4 pci (not onboard)
MSI k8 neo-platinum MTB
ATI -X850XT PCI-express
Akasa 460watt ultra quiet PSU
Windows SP2 (updated)

firstly, do you get the same problem in safe mode. if you don't it's likely to be a dodgy driver somewhere. Make sure you are using the correct drivers and that they are up to date.

Next check your memory. Most BSODS are memory related (as I found out to my cost recently).
Make sure the memory contacts are clean and free from dust. Then make sure they are seated properly.

If the problem persists, then run memtest86+ version 1.65. here You'll need to create a CD from an ISO file and change your boot order to boot from CD first. It's a superb tool and will soon report any problems withthe RAM. If it reports errors, then it's likely that either your memory settings are too aggresive or the RAM is faulty.

Check that your memory timings are correct and they are running on the correct volts (Vdimm)..

Try these and report back

:)
