Ho-Kay peeps... just switched off zelda for the day and i must say i'm chuffed to bits :)

here's my story...

i pre-ordered back in october with a popular online game store, but apparently my order was misplaced or summat and the order seemed irretreavable, so i was forced (on thursday) to start checking all the local supermarkets etc, my best option seemed to be asda who had 10 in stock...

i overslept...

... and got to the store at 7:52 (doors opening at 8:00) with 19 people in front of me... suffice to say i was driven by cold passion and after an almighty supermarket gauntlet/sprint was 9th in the queue and dragged my new Wii home with the ole heart still pumpin fast :D

(and to top all this off, just got an email from said online shop apologising for the delay in my order (apparently it was found again and set back in motion) - and they'd like to offer me a free game of my choice as compensation, so when my second console comes next tuesday (they reckon) i get red steel for free, so i've had a right minter of a day :D)

... anyway onto the console:

physically, its awesome looking, its tiny, its slick, its the ducks nuts!

in terms of games my judgement is limited due to the fact that i played just under 10 hours of zelda today and only a quick peek at sports, but as much as i really love my new console, i have a nagging suspision that all the motion sensitivity stuff is just a gimmick and in fact offers no or possible less functional advantage over the GC controls - zelda is a truly awesome game, but i feel the motion sensitive side of things is actually its weekest point but dont let this put you off, its still the best game i've played in a good long time!

lets hope i warm to the new level of interractivity, cuz its one beauty of a console!

hope everyone is enjoying theirs!

My 2 pennies worth:

Gorgeous piece of kit. Heavier than I thought after seeing various inside pics, the wiimote and nunchuk are smaller than I imagined, but all in all a well made piece of kit. Hardware wise, the only downside I can see (but can see the practicalities) is just how thin the sensor bar cable is. It's SO flipsy that one bad tug and I think it will snap, but, I guess it has to be that thin to be so flexible.

Games wise, a quick round-up:

Wii:Sports. Incredible. Absolutely love it, and it's proven to me just how damn unfit I am. Finished a 15min boxing session absolutely breathless, baseball was great fun, personally I love the golf and the bowling and tennis have dragged the mrs and the neighbours into screams of laughter.

Wii:Play. As a series of games, they are awful. But for a game that really comes with a Wiimote, it's probably good. Introduces you to the wiimote, twists, turns, getting use to the fact that you do NOT point at the screen and gives a very very basic guide to usage.

Red Steel. First 10mins you're gonna regret buying it. Graphics are 'okish', and the STUPID way the arm bends is annoying. But as I mentioned elsewhere, if you approach this game as a fast action FPS like Doom, FarCry, PD0, etc, then you'll be disappointed. If you spend a bit of time with it, take things in a more calm and stealthy approach then you'll be rewarded with a good shooter and definately gets you use to the wiimote as a 'gun'.

Rayman, Raving Rabbids: Again, another game that had be taking a break. The dancing game is brilliant but if you're after (what I thought) a first person shooter kinda affair then you WILL be disappointed. Ultimately this is a 'go from here to here, do a few little missions, carry on'. It IS good fun, even in single player it's great fun, graphics wise pretty good.

Need for Speed Carbon. Pretty good racer. If you want PGR3 then forget this, steer clear. But if you're bored of the same-old NFS type games and want to try something new in terms of experience, then using the wiimote as a steering wheel is good fun. Takes a bit of getting use to, and despite the videos you see of people twisting their entire bodies to turn, then those videos were probably taken seconds after they started playing. In reality it's fine turning of the Wiimote and it is pretty responsive.

Super Monkey Ball: Incredible! Definately a new experience on how to play these games, very very difficult to get use to the controls but again very responsive and gorgeous graphics. The minigames are mindblowing, worth the money for all those, especially how nearly every minigame can be multiplayer and range from snowboarding, gliding, balancing over a rope and jumping a skipping rope.

COD3: Well. This I think is good. Graphically pretty good, there's so much action you can't stop to admire (or criticise) the graphics, but if you can remember how much COD2 dragged you in, then this is the same put better. It's a great feeling using your own line of sight judgement to take out a sniper on a roof, brilliant when you're on a one to one struggle with the enemy and definately drags you in. If you didn't think this would make it on the Wii, then stand in the corner as you're mistaken.

Zelda. Never played one before, but it's incredible. Love it. THIS is what the Wii was made for, drags you in, the interaction with things is great. Can't praise this game enough.

Final points in case people are waiting or still thinking on getting one or not.

Graphics: Currently plugged into a 2407WFP monitor through composite (component not coming till tomorrow) and it's AWFUL!!!!! Weeks ago I said it would look awful on a big screen, people said I was wrong, well I'm not. It's dire. Tried it on 2 of the neighbours TV's (a 26" and a 32") and the 32" is horrific. Tried it on my standard 21" CRT and it's pretty good. So if you've got a big screen, I think component is a must.

If you're putting your Wii on your desk, then a word of warning and start to plan NOW. The Wii has a minimum distance where it just will NOT work. If you plan to put the sensor bar ontop of your monitor and you're a couple of feet from the desk, then you're gonna be disappointed with the sensitivity (if it will work at all). I'm getting great response times sitting about 3-4 foot away from my monitor, better still if I'm further away. But if you're sitting at a desk and hope to play, then it's just not going to work.

This is a new era in gaming. It DOES take a lot of getting use to. It's still hard to realise that games like Red Steel and COD3 the Wiimote moves your viewpoint, and at first you have the wiimote fixed in your hand whilst your nunchuk 'strafes' for position. You'll say "O I can't get use to this", "Too sensitive", "that just doesn't work", but after a few hours you'll get use to the fact that you're 'play area' is inside a cube and not just a fixed 2d plane you're looking at.

Overall. Everything I expected, and more.

Nice post, ~J~. Mine... er, my son's is waiting in a cupboard till the 25th. So tempted to give it a test drive, to make sure it lives up to my expectations, but I think you just answered that for me :)

Were those both LCD TV's?

It looked OK on my 28" CRT even through composite but I can imagine what the picture would be like on composite on your 2407 as I ran my 360 for a couple of weeks on composite on mine at launch due to no VGA cables, bleurgh!

I have the scart cable coming hopefully next week so it'll be interesting to see how that improves the picture on my CRT.

I won't be trying the Wii on my 2405 as it's going to be in the front room for everyone to play on.

Seriously, you should get it out because my updates today took over an hour to get from the servers and on Xmas day I dread to think how overloaded they would be. Not compulsory of course but some features don't work without the latest firmware.

Get it out, make sure it all works, update it and of course have a quick blast :)

It looks pretty good via composite on my 42 " Hitachi Plasma. Rayman is great fun, Wii Sports is great, Wii Play is ok at best, and Monkey ball is brilliant.

Whoops. I had a rather manic go at tennis target practice and ending up swiping the remote at the back of a wooden chair. Battery compartment flies off, batteries fly across the room just missing the window and the B trigger is bust. All in less than 24 hours! :(
