So tell me about Yamaha 2002/2003 Fazers...
Liking the thought of these over CBR600 and heard theyre solid, forgiving bikes for first time big big bike riders! Plus can go rapid if pushed and have a big tank for 200 miles potentially per tank?

Cheers!

I've done some research on the subject of "first big bikes" and fazers are good bikes, especially when you consider they are reliable and can be bought for cheap.

Personally though, I feel that the Honda CB500's are the bikes to get, if you are using them predominantly for commuting purposes. The reliability on the CB500 is legendary, which is always a good thing. A lot of training schools use the CB500 to teach on, for good reason. If you are buying the bike not for commuting, then the CB500 might not be for you.

The CB500 dullness and general slowness / lack of desirability is also legendary :)

They teach on CB500s as they are cheap and no-one crys when you drop / crash one, you're just doing the world a big favour

Uhhh, prolly upset someone with above, but they don't do it for me :)

Just got my seat the other day, waited nearly 4 months for it!! Added a John Mcguinness DB screen. Just got to wait for some slim ballast coming in stock next month for HID lights.

Looking good, not sure on the height of your screen, suspect it makes it comfy to ride but it's so high...

You gonna love the improvments with HIDs, very few bikes have them but I don't know why as they are one of best mods out there. What temp you going for ?, I went for 6k as I like abit of blue in light but not so much as to reduce light too much. 6k also rocks for night time.

I can see your point. But if its your first big bike, you wont want something ridiculously powerful. And if you intend to use the bike for commuting, the last thing you want is a bike that really makes you work hard - imagine arriving at work, mentally and physically tired, before you have even started your shift.

Also, consider that as it is your first big bike, there is a higher likelihood that you may end up dropping the bike. I would much rather drop a Honda CB500 than a CBR600RR, for example.

Consider also that the insurance on a CB500 (as your first big bike, after passing test), will also be comparatively low, on top of the CB500s low fuel consumption, running costs and super reliability.

The CB500 is arguably the best bike to buy, if you have just passed your test.

Does anyone know how the CB500 compares with the Suzuki GS500, because the GS500 seems to fill all the criteria above (dull, cheap if dropped, easy, used in schools etc) and I really don't like the GS500. Definitely easy to ride, but also definitely dull as ditch-water.

That review ties in pretty well with my experience with one, but I was hoping (for Suzuki's sake!) that I was on a poor specimen. Seems they might all be that bad.

I passed my test on a gs500 and thought it was utter pants, I currently run a cb500s and love it. I have rode quite a few bigger bikes eg vfr750, varadero and bmw 1200gs and I still love going back to my cb500!

Running costs are awsome too, for a chilled out ride I can get 65mpg, hammer the thing into the redline everywhere and I dont get any less than 45mpg!

As long as the reason you want a bike isnt to go stupidly fast in a straight line and you don't have huge amounts of disposable income then the cb is probably as good as it gets for entry level

£1800, and with less than 10k miles on the clock.
The picture doesn't do it justice, it is in immaculate condition.
Official stats at top speed of 176mph, but current owner reckons he's had it timed at 190 at bruntingthorpe.

Still way faster than I will ever ride it at, even if it's 'only' 176!

v nice bike, few mate's had those and they still say too this day it was the best bike they have owned :)

never got round to owning one myself :(
thats a lot of bike for the money enjoy

I can't wait to collect it on Monday. I had no idea something that was classified as a hypersports bike could be so comfortable for someone my size (lardass).
Pound for pound, couldn't really find anything better for the money. I've always liked them, but commuted through central London daily, so needed something more upright. No such need now, so just wanted something for fun. I reckon this fits the bill :)

Like the bike, but not too sure of the screen? The bike is all small and smooth, but the screen sticks up? I'd go for a black low profile one :)
