As title..

Been using bitchX for a while, but only because that was the first client I stumbled upon and may not be the "best"

Haven't tried that many though, so will be interested in what others have to say. I did try ircii briefly but decided I prefer bitchx.

I'm also interested in what finch offers (the command line based pidgin) but haven't looked into it yet.
 
irssi (in screen , of course)

I tend to switch between many machines each day, and like to take my irc with me without reconnecting each time, and taking channel/buffer histories with me (unlike a BNC)
 
Been using XChat in Windows and Linux for more than a year now. Beats mIRC, hands down.

If I had a spare shell account I'd set up irssi in screen and use XChat with remote irssi plugin, but alas, my current shell account sucks.
