what causes the sudden drops in performance with the raptor, is there anything i can do to get rid of them especially the 1st one :)

I get peaks like that when I run HD Tune for my 150GB Raptor, im not sure there's anything wrong, perhaps it just read slower a little second for some reason  lol.

The access times are nice :D though aren't they (for a hard drive... :P ).

That's excellent mate. I'm keeping an eye out for a spare hardware RAID controller through work, only problem is that they are all SCSI cards.
If you can lay your hands on a SAS card that will run SATA disks fine.

It's just something else accessing the disk. The HDTune benchmark takes a while so there's no easy way of preventing it.

I'm trying. The problem is that 95% of the servers that we use are SCSI. Though there are some nice SCSI cards about, might be tempted to get one and get two or so smallish SCSI drives to see what they'll perform like.

No idea if this is any good, but it's 2am, i am very very bored, so i figured why not bench my hardrive.

Not a clue how to interpret those results so you lot can instead :)

Oh, if i were to set up a Raid 0 and Raid 1 array on a P5K-E, i presume i would need a controller card? Any cheap reccommendations?

Just got hold of a new drive for my laptop, 320GB 5,400rpm WD Scorpio, didnt think to bench the old drive but it was a bog standard 160GB Seagate IIRC.

Does the CPU usage appear a bit too high? Not seen many laptop benches in here so cant really compare.

Does feel a bit quicker in use, Vista start up time is quicker, sustained transfers across the disk/partitions is around double the old drive I believe, great drive for £80, virtually silent, in fact, I have never heard it, even when under a lot of work

can i just ask - ive got a 1TB WD Hard Drive, and when running the benchmarks, it says the speed is 4MB/sec....yes 4, with both hd tune and hd tach...surely that cant be right?

Is something accessing the drive ie copying files, unzipping, burning etc? If not then I'd RMA it!

ok well i found the problem - the SATA port

plugged it into another port and now its on average 80MB/sec

firstly is this an ok speed for a WD 1TB?

and secondly why is the SATA port slowing down the read speed so much? is there any way to fix it? or do i just not use that port again?

I got a Perc 5i card off the bay and set it up with a fresh install of Vista X64. This is with 5x500GB Western Digital RE2 drives. Speeds are looking a bit low though, any ideas??
