Post your hard drive benchmarks!

2x Velociraptor 150's (HLFS) in RAID 0. Abit IP35 Pro mobo / ICH controller, Intel Matrix drivers as of 23/10/08

wow maybe i should ditch the 680i for one these, why are navidia mobo so bad with raid?

I have 3 HDs in my PC.

1: Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200RPM (IDE). Windows boots from this yet it is the worst performer of the three!

2: Maxtor 200GB SATA 7200RPM

3: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200.11 SATA-II 32MB Cache

Wonder how much of a performance boost i would notice if i installed Windows on one of my other drives?

4*640gb black drives, raid 0 array

raid 5 block the raid 0 array is backed up onto.

Feels exactly the same as a 3*300gb velociraptor raid 0 array that I spent the weekend fiddling about with for loading, etc and much quicker and transferring large files around the place and at £200 is far bit cheaper too. :)

Great thing about these drives is the noise they make, or serious lack of. I can't hear them unless I put my head in the case, next to them. :D

A Brand spanking Sammy 500Gb F1.

The only use it has had is being installed into Vista with Disk Management before running HDTune on it. Tomorrow it will go with my other Sammy F1 in Raid 0. Will see how well these 2 puppies perform together.

Heres my first raid 0 attempt, 3x250gb wd re3's 32kb stripe.

Not turned the back writing thing off yet, do i need the hitachi tool to do that?

RAID 0 (2x Seagate 500GB 7200.10)

Single Seagate 1TB 7200.11

The single 7200.11 is faster than 2 of the 7200.10 together, which is strange. Why's that? I didn't realise there's that much difference.

One question, is PCI Express x1 card a limiting factor in RAID speeds? Because the 1TB drive is directly connected to the motherboard, whilst the 2x500GBs are connected through a RAID card.

Annoying drop in performance between 43GB & 50GB, which happens every time, so it's not just something accessing the drive.

How many of you would RMA (under the DSA) a new drive based on this, with all other diagnostics passing ok?

Looks pretty fast that m8. Be even better if you can smooth out that sequential read.

There's a couple of questions that spring to mind there. Are 3 drives faster than 2 in RAID0 and how much difference to performance does the stripe size make?

Got my 320GB WD3200AAKS today and i plan to use for my game installs only

when i benchmarked it i noticed the access time is pretty high at 15ms+
i have AAM set to the maximum so thats not it
Also the CPU Usage with HDTune is through the roof
im guessing i have no grounds to RMA :(

think its likely to have an impact on the performance
i reckon i can sell this drive to a mate at a loss of around £4 then get something else

this is a games only drive so performance is the no1 thing for me

Those are questions i have wondered too but as this is my first array i cannot answer. 3 drives to me seem very fast to me and 32kb was suggested to me as the best stripe for an OS with game files.
As to the sequentail read i have no idea i have tried ftool to tun off back write but it failed to see my drives, im not fussed its fast where i want it to be anyway.

Interesting about the stripe size.

Its the first time I have done this and I chose the size as 128kb.

Can someone shed some light or provide a link to explain what importance stripe sizes are please?

Have a look Here and Here

Some time ago, I did a comparison of different stripe sizes, 16KB, 32KB, 64KB and 128KB, and I found that a 32KB stripe was the best for "general" usage....
