I edited my post, but to answer more briefly. We'd only do BGP on a 10Mbit connection or higher generally (we've done a couple lower, I think the lowest is 4Mbit). Delivery is by ethernet (we don't do any high bandwidth non ethernet circuits - E1 is the highest speed non ethernet excluding DSL) and over fibre - probably a BT WES circuit as a tail.

A quick glance at invoicing suggest for 4Mbit we're charging about £1500 (keep in mind thats inner london)

Good to know, I'm actually impressed you have provided BGP on a 4Meg line :P

4 over 10, so we charge costs for the 10mbit bearer and ip transit for 4mbit. The customer has a global network and is multi-homed in the states so it was the only way it could be made to work...

Cool, maybe one day I will be able to afford a fat pipe with BGP.. (maybe after I have built a house on a nice expanse of land, with DC style fake flooring (only better looking) for running cables / aircon / heating :P... and the helicopter and fighter jets on the lawn...and a few billion in the bank... Ahh a man can dream)
 
Ok, my current home network is as shown below ...



(yes I was bored at work one day and slapped together a Visio diagram :p)

Doesn't show the HPUX or Solaris boxes as they are not currently on the network at all. Could be immensely improved by just getting a larger gigabit switch in the office and run proper cable drops into the other rooms but that would involve a lot of upheaval I don't currently want hence the use of the powerline networking kit. Oh and I know I have what looks like a switch which is only being used by one device in the lounge but the other ports are used if I am working on something, (e.g. a new build), in there ...
 
My setup includes a BT Voyager 2091 ADSL router/modem, which is connected to a Belkin switch. Connected to that is my machine, my crunching box, sisters computer, xbox360 and my dads laptop.

I do have an old cisco switch which fails to power up and I'm looking at trying to fix it, but have no idea where to start :p
 
If your Studying for a networking exam then fair enough, but some of the kit you guys have for a home setup is just way OTT. I used to be a 4-5pc's, Cisco this + that type man but now I'm happy with a Download box, Gaming box and a laptop all hooked up to a plain old wireless router :)
 
Also, what the managed switches and firewalls but standard cruddy routers?

I'd consider a decent router more important...
 
OK I'll bite, here is my full setup:

Main PC:
Q6600, 4GB Ram, 1/2 TB HD, Gigabyte P35-DS3R, BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2.
Second PC:
P4 3.2 HT, 2GB Ram, 1/2 TB HD, Asus P4c-800e deluxe, ATI GFX Card.
Third PC:
P4 1.7, 512MB Ram, 100GB HD, MSI MS-6534, nVidia Geforce 2.
Laptop 1:
Toshiba Satellite 5200.
Laptop 2:
Toshiba somethingorotherbelongstothewife
and a PS3.

Cisco 800 series ADSL router connected to ADSL24.
Cisco PIX 501 sitting between the Router and the switches.
Belkin G+MIMO Wireless Switch connected into...
3Com 10/100 SuperStack II.

I've had way more kit than that over the years, working in IT tends to do that to you.

I don't find it a problem as it doesn't actually do much. I had an 871W and a 1760 too but I could achieve everything I wanted to do with that WRT54G which I had knocking about anyway, so I sold them both. The only thing the WRT-54G does in my setup is route to the internet, other than that it doesn't do any of my routing at all, thats what the L3 switch and debian box is for :)

And as for the router, I'm using a BSD Distro.
This may be replaced by a cisco router when i get my L3 switch, but I still may keep it as a FW as it run's snort w/prelude IDS.

As said before, some of us do this for a living, being able to test out an idea quickly in the evening is priceless. Same for exams (particularly when you go beyond CCNP level). I have most of my kit at work in the lab and just a few bits and pieces at home but if I was contracting I'd likely have a lot more at home...
