Long story short, I bought an 8800gt off ebay, and I'm not sure it's working 100%.

Although Dead Space works fine, Fallout 3 is having major problems. Also having very bad 2d performance in Linux, which I didn't have with the 7800gt.

So what tests can I run to be absolutely sure it isn't the card's fault? I'm going to swap my 7800gt back in and try Fallout 3 again, and verify that the Linux performance is back to normal.

Short of simply playing other games on it, is there anything which is more reliably guaranteed to find problems if they exist?

Like you said, compare it to another card. Ensure all drivers are up to date, and there are no conflicting drivers (driver cleaner). You could try running some benchmarks? I don't think such software exists that tells you whether your card has specific problems though.
