Potential Motherboard failure?

Hello all! My PC has been broken for a while now. It all started when i woke up from a nap thinking the pc was turned off (sleepmode). I went ahead without thinking and turned it on, then suddenly the pc did a series of restarts and didnt get past the black screen. I turned off the power and waited for a while before i booted. I tried to boot numerous times and the whole thing was dead no noise, no movement whatsoever from anywhere.
So after doing some research and discussing the problem with some friends we came to the idea it could have been the PSU that was fried. So i arranged to borrow my friends old working PSU which he had recently replaced. I connected everything up and low and behold, nothing. Not a dicky!

Now I'll admit i don't know a great deal about computers, but am i right in thinking that with a working PSU and assuming the motherboard worked as well that their should have been some beeping (noise) from the motherboard if it was anything else? like the RAM GPU ect ect.
I've done quite abit of research via the internet and what not. Most of the information i read led me to motherboard and power button failure. How likely is it that it could be power button failure over motherboard? I'll admit i've tried to get to the power button in my case (antec 1200) but it seems i would require something else other than a simple screwdriver? (to get to the front) I didn't want to force anything.

Thanks for reading, and sorry it was a bit long.

Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated :)

What are your specs?

You can short the power connectors on the motherboard using a screwdriver, this will turn the motherboard on (should it be working). Short the + and - power switch connectors to test the board without the case power button.

If that fails, try it outside of the case on a box/non-conductive material and try a bare bones setup, 1 stick of RAM, no GPU etc.

Hi,

Just so you know, switching a PC OFF or ON should not cause it to fail completely like your's seems to have done. Have pressed the power button when my PC was already in sleep mode many times, no harm done.

Power button failure is very unlikely, it's a simple switch.

Please list your exact components, including the replacement PSU.

Also, have you tried taking out the CMOS battery, waiting at least 10 entire minutes, before replacing it? Could also disconnect all of the harddrives while you wait those 10 minutes, that way we can see if you can boot into the bios.

cpu-Sandy bridge i7 2600k
motherboard-Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3
4 gig ram
gpu-gtx580
psu- ax1200 gold
replacement psu- 550watt cant remember name will update tomorrow
hdd- seagate 1tb hdd

The Cmos battery was literally replaced a month ago, but yeah i swapped it with a new one anyway to be safe.

After reading ThaReaperGuy's excellent advise, have you tried doing what he suggested?

I'd be really surprised if the switch had caused a fatal fault. Fair enough swapping it but have you tried a clear cmos and disconnect everything else that you can? i5-2600K has an onboard gpu, right? Try taking it to the bare bones of the system, remove your GPU too.

Just motherboard, cpu, ram, power supply and power switch, kb and mouse an monitor.
