Potential new Xbox 360 owner, questions.

The games are designed for widescreen displays so you should have no issues.

EDIT: One thing I just remembered about VGA - when I used to use it on my Dell 2405FPW, I'd get a "tearing" band across the screen about 1/3 way down. I always thought it was due to the 50/60Hz issue. Anyone else encountered this whilst using VGA and LCD displays?

What res do you use? I'm thinking about trading in my monitor for a widescreen one, do all games work ok?

Edit: Nice deal you got there frank btw

Any widescreen monitor will do via VGA, you will be able to use the monitors maximum resolution.

I am currently using a Dell 2405 via VGA, or a Toshiba 32WLT66 via Component.

Another noob question incoming!

What cable would I need to use if say I got a Toshiba or Samsung 32" TV? It seems some people use VGA, you just said composite, hell whats wrong with the HD cable that I got today with my premium?! :o

I haven't tested different cables, i just use the one which came with my 360 using the composite connection. My games look amazing :).

And I assume the compenant cable is the one supplied with the premium package?
Don't get mixed up between Composite and Component, all too many people do.

Composite is your regular SCART connection, Yellow (video) and Red/White (L/R) audio. Component is far superior in quality, which is Red, Green and Blue. Composite is SD and Component is HD.

A lot of people say VGA is better, some say Component. There isn't much between them really, I only use VGA on my Dell because of the new update and I wanted to see what it was like, it's also because I am able to run at 1080p, something you can't do via Component.

There is nothing wrong with the cable you got other than you can't connect to a regular PC monitor, hence the VGA cable. Many users here only have PC monitors so they need a VGA cable, if you have a HDTV and don't want to spend any money then there really isn't anything wrong with Component.

And also Kudos on this thread by the way, all too often I see threads "Worried about getting Xbox360" or "Should I get an Xbox360" only for the thread to stick around and the original poster to not bother despite everyone saying 'Go for it', nice to see one pop up today at 9am and for the poster to pop straight into the town and pick one up, so well done, nice to see someone not post for the sake of posting and actually have a purpose behind the thread.

Hope you enjoy it, I'm sure you will. If you fancy some multiplayer on any of your future games I am more than up for it, though I don't have Command and Conquer 3, but I do have most of the major games :).

Currently using the exact same setup and I haven't experienced so much as a minor rip, let alone full blown tearing :).

How weird!

Frank - if you're going to get a 720p then the component cable you got with the console will do just fine! I find it minutely smooths around the edges of things so you don't get the sharp (sometimes aliased) look of VGA.

Thanks for the great reply Nokkon, tis all clear now. I certainly do feel that playing in my 15" TV using composite really isnt doing the console justice. Need to save the pennies for that 32" HDTV.

I hate 16:10 monitors for the 360. It looks apalling on my NEC 20WGX2 compared to my LG 37LC3R TV. I highly recommend a 16:9 widescreen TV over any 16:10 screen (except the Dell 2407 1:1 mapping revision A04) anyday.
