Potential problem with 4090

Been trying to get to bottom of this for awhile now :( sometimes the 4090 will work in games when theres demand and sometimes not! it will never blue screen or not power up and sometimes its fine no problem.

When it acts up on any game i will get very low fps and the fans are not spinning on the card but all lit up. I have to reboot the pc and that sorts it!

Specs of pc are

7950x3d stock
msi x670e tomahawk Updated bios to latest
32gb ddr5 6000mhz EXPO enabled default
samsung 990 2tb Updated firmware to latest
corsair 1000w atx 3.0
4090 msi gaming x trio stock

Card is powered by the 600w cable I have updated the bios for the motherboard. I have reinstalled the GPU card drivers to the latest. I have uninstalled MSI center and tuner see if that was at fault. When it works it will work throughout a gaming session and works flawless no issues performance does not drop off or anything like that!

Anyone got any suggestions before I contact retailer? Thanks

Try toggling HAGS - if it's on turn it off or vice-versa.

Something else I need to turn off as well as HAGS because if I turn it off I get terrible FPS 130 from like 240-300 :( on warzone 2 and other games seems to be a lot worse also :( does something else need to be selected or unselected ? Thanks

Does event viewer say anything under windows logs > system?
Theres another power option in windows control panel, System > Power > Power mode

If event viewer points to a pcie power issue go into your bios and mess with the PCIe Native Power Management settings.
I'll check thanks

I have a feeling its something to do with the fan setup on my system ... system fan 6 is the GPU so I have selected it from DC to PWM see if it helps other than that I have no idea what it could be!

Done all above and last night had to reboot got back into windows and it's happened again GPU fans not spinning hwmonitor reads 50w rebooted fine again back to normal? Can't think what it can be but if it was a power issue or GPU issue you would think by simple reboot wouldn't fix it? Annoying tbh

Sounds like there is something wrong with the card, it sometimes works but other times not and you don't change anything in between.

Problem is the retailer may struggle to find anything if it decides to work when they test it, I'd say try to get video evidence if possible, show it not working properly then a restart, then it working, it'll show it went from one state to another without you changing anything.

Good luck, I'm somewhat stressed at the moment as my brand new 7900xt has gone back with a weird issue, and I am waiting for feedback on that, fingers crossed they agree it's borked.
Might have to contact retailer and explain see what they say but haven't ever had this issue before and tried googling etc and doesn't seem a common problem?

Shall I try and update the bios on the card? See if that helps? Anyone know how you do it? I've downloaded MSI centre they is nothing on there

When performance drops what are the card temps and clock speeds like?
Core clock speeds are basically next to nothing temp is ok as it's not being used... When I turn on the pc the fans do spin then when windows screen comes up to log in fans stop ... Then that's it can't do anything to get the GPU to work MSI afterburner shows nothing hwmonitor etc then when I reboot it often fixes it sometimes not. I've just changed the cable see it that helped but no :( quite odd isn't it?

Right got a video of it sorry about the angle....

When the card works it works as it should no issues and doesn't fault. Just sometimes when I boot up the pc works when it wants then if I reboot it will sometimes kick in sometimes it takes 2 reboots :(

Got a sore neck after watching that.

You have connected the HDMI/DP cable to the 4090 and not the motherboard?

It looks like a software issue to me, like the GPU clocks are not kicking in. Weird how the GPU utilisation stays at 0%, hence the question above.
Haha sorry about that Yeah DP cable plugged straight into the back of the 4090. As I said when it works its fine does not fault! but when it decides to not work won't work at all takes a reboot or 2 for it to kick in! Software side I have reinstalled drivers geforce experience and uninstalled all MSI software ive changed TPM setting to off in BIOS also IGPU off. I just don't know what it could be!

It appears MSi motherboards and nvidia GPU's don't play nice together at the moment for whatever reason throws the pci-e slot into 1.1 and thats my issue with the 4090! Update on this issue MSi aint a clue on a fix as they can't get it to do the error in there lab so no idea on a fix! Ill speak to retailer and go through the hassle on getting the motherboard swapped out! ball ache.

Does not happen with a AMD card knew i should have gone 7900xtx haha

Do you have access to another pc you can try the card in?
No m8 only have this one, from my understanding its literally a MSi issue with nvidia cards ... I've not seen any other manufacturer with the same issue. It makes sense it being this as well because as others have reported a reboot or 2 clears it then when you shut down and reboot back up it will glitch back to 1.1... annoying issue

Do you have MSI dragon installed?
No all the bloated software like that i uninstalled thinking that could have been the problem but obviously now i know its this not any software, what does MSI dragon do?

On a side note I updated to the latest bios beta version last night and now the PC won't even post on default EXPO 1 settings at 6000mhz was fine on the last 2 bios!!! so ive got to look at that now also!

Do you have a source for that (other than your own issues) - MSI sells a *lot* of motherboards and I'd have thought this would have immediately come to light at the launch of AM5 if it was a 'thing'..?

Incidentally, have you tried forcing the slot to PCIe 4.0 (or even 3.0) in the BIOS?
Yeah head over to MSi forums its all on there. Yeah tried that forcing the slot and it still glitches out!

Didn't EXPO just get a big update to allow faster DDR5 speeds
yeah and im on that latest bios for the MSi board and the pc won't even boot on default DRR5 EXPO 1 6000MHZ setting :( was fine before no issues... another problem ive got to sort.

Fixed it's a bug with MSI boards that was created on the later bios releases putting the voc voltage to 1.25v fixes it. They are aware and hopefully next bios update it's fixed. Hate being on beta Bios releases
