Potential PS3 Buyer

I use both still. PC will always be my home but my PS3 is great for games I can't get for the PC or are better on a console.

E.g. hardcore FPS' like Portal, TF2, CSS and COD4 are all bought for the PC because keyboard and mouse can't be beaten for speed. Whereas GTA 4 and Resistance 2 are both bought for the PS3.

I was the same. FPS on the PC only, however after owning a PS3 for two weeks now I'm getting pretty used to playing Resistance 2 on the joypad. Still feels very strange, but I'm guessing that it'll pass.

Despite playing and enjoying a number of FPS games on consoles, they never EVER feel right, no matter how many years you have spent playing on them.
Today, I am going to go and get Resistance 2, I really enjoyed Resistance 1, however, were it on PC as well, i wouldnt even consider buying it on PS3.
TBH I think thats my opinion too - Ill happily play and enjoy a console FPS that is only available on the consoles but if its on PC (or even remotely likely) Ill get it on the PC without hesitation...

They are for different mindsets though - I play console FPSes for a laugh since the control system generally negates requiring skill, but PC ones much more properly since Ive got an opportunity to show off my skills (or lack thereof). Comparing the control systems just shows how inadequate the pads are for such games...

Personally Id recommend a PC+PS3 combination since you rarely will see exclusives outside of PS3 which for me negated some of the X360s benefits...

The one advantage consoles have over PCs when it comes to shooters is the fact that everyone has the same control method. I remember when i used to play TFC competitively i had a CFG file kept backed up on a CD, in this CFG file was a huge list of settings that i had tweaked for years to get them JUST RIGHT for me, and i'll be honest it's the most controllable a computer game has ever been for me because of it.

Then steam came along and broke a good 50% of those settings, totally changing the way the game handled. By then it was beginning to die anyway so i didn't bother trying to resurrect what i was used to, i just gave up.

Sometimes simplicity is a good thing.

I find console FPS a lot more rewarding.

Why? Most of them have a lot of auto aim removing some of the skill required to pull off them 'leet' headshots.

I switch from console and PC FPS just fine without any controlling issues, though the auto aim in some of the console games is just ******* ridiculous, I'm looking at you Call of Duty 4.

To be honest I've never had to tweak configs when playing PC games online and have never once felt like I was at a disadvantage.

Yeah some people will have better mice but that can only help so much, I've gone from cheap-ish mice to a rather expensive one and really the only difference has been comfort. (going from ball to optical was nice as well)

Hey everyone, thinking about getting myself a PS3....question I've really got to ask is aimed more at the people who have gone from PC > PS3....how do you find playing games (especially FPS's) on the PS3 and using the controllers rather than the keyboard & mouse combo

I did my conversion from mouse + k/b, to pad, via a weekend long stint on GRAW for the 360 :D

Over the last two years or so of console gaming, using a pad for a FPS game has become second nature, it even seems right for some reason I can’t explain, and the old argument that it levels the playing field is kind of true (everyone using the same device etc).

As for the PS3 and FPS gaming, I personally think the pad is more responsive to stick movement than my 360’s controllers, but that’s just my own preference. You certainly wont regret getting either, and any worries you have, they’ll go if you put the effort in (trust me I know).

Scort.

because everyone is being assisted by the same auto aim, on PC the playing field will be all over the place as nobody is being aided.

I bummed the Call of Duty 4 beta on the 360 but it wasn't rewarding, I had good stats on it but I didn't feel good or anything because the auto aim is so rampant, god I hate that game even on PC it's a sprayfest.

The biggest issue for me was getting used to a controller again after many years with a mouse and keyboard, but after a fortnight the controller became second nature.

I've had my ps3 just over a month now and it's not too bad. To begin with you will probably be pretty awful but adapting isn't hard. KB&M is still 100% preferred for me and if my PC was decent enough (WAW is just playable on my m1710) to play a game that was released on both then I'd definitely buy the PC version. Killzone 2 (demo) is quite good fun although as a first induction to console gaming you may love or loathe it tbh.

The Xbox pad is very slightly better for me in the very little experience I've had with it but the PS3 DS3 pad is fine for the most part.

The auto-aim isnt that rampant. I dunno if they changed it after the beta but its still a lot harder to aim with a pad in COD4 than it is on a PC with KB/M. This is why I find it more rewarding as its harder. COD W@W has worse auto-aim I found. You can actually watch the cross hair move a good inch on screen.

Ok, well I've got an opportunity to get a PS3 160GB version via the market on here, is it worth getting a 160gb version over an 80gb version? is there much difference?

Apart from Hard drive it is the same. If you buy it at retail you get some downloadable PSN games with it, but not 2nd hand. You can easily get an 80GB PS3 with a top game for about £270 now, new. Plus you can upgrade the HDD later if you really want a bigger one (standard 2.5 inch SATA laptop drive).

Yeah I've seen a new 80gb version on the net with SF4 for £280.

The 160gb version I'm interested in is basically a swap deal with my 24" BenQ monitor. Seeing as I'm selling my PC now I've got a laptop to do the basics on (which is all I use my PC for recently) it seems good deal to me
