hello all,

i've not build a pc for about 6/7 years so i'm out of the loop. i've been using laptops/notebooks only the last few years.

anyways, i'm taking the plunge and getting a new machine. i will be using it for a number of things:

1) video editing - jahshaka, premiere, after effects, sony vegas etc (i VJ in my spare time)
2) 3d modelling/animation - 3ds max, cinema 4d, blender etc (see above)
3) making game mods - something i want to get into
4) playing games - something i have not done in a while
5) OSX86 (i promise i am an apple developer)
6) linux dev work (probably the least intensive)
7) my girlfriend will also be running adobe photoshop on the PC
8) obscure VJ applications - visualjockey, resolume, vjamm etc.
9) occasional flash work for the VJ'ing

i already have 2 very sweet eizo flexscan 1280x1024 LCD's that previously were connected to my notebook docking station. all my video editing and stuff i am used to doing on 2 screens, so dual video out is a necessity. i only really ingest video off firewire from my camcorder, i don't use any other medium for shooting therefore i don't need a capture card or anything like that. occassionally when i want video games pr0n i would like to be able to lug the machine to the lounge and plug it into an HDTV with DVI and play games over wireless mouse/keyboard, so case that's too massive. i have pretty decent speakers too already.

anyways, this is what i was thinking of buying, after doing a small amount of research and looking at what i want out of a pc. i'd really appreciate opinions of those wiser than i in this sort of thing:

1 CP-128-IN Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN )
1 MB-152-AS Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-152-AS)
1 MY-079-CS Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS)
1 GX-086-AS Asus ATI Radeon EAX-X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) -
2 HD-070-WD Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-070-WD)
1 CD-019-AS Asus DRW-1608P3S 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Beige) - Retail (CD-019-AS)
1 HS-007-VP VapoChill Micro Ultra Low Noise (Socket 775) (06-L-0017) (HS-007-VP)
1 SC-040-CL Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (SC-040-CL)
2 CB-000-WD Western Digital Secure Connect Serial ATA Cable (CB-000-WD)
1 CA-024-LL Lian-Li PC V1000 PLUS Silver Aluminium Midi-Tower (No PSU) (CA-024-LL)
1 CA-046-AN Antec NeoHE 550W Modular ATX2.0 PSU (CA-046-AN)
1 AC-000-AC Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) (AC-000-AC)

one or two more questions

1) i like the look of the lian li pc 600 case, it seemed to be out of stock. are there clear benefits between the v1000 and the 600?
2) am i being a cheapskate with my soundcard?
3) will it be a Very Good Idea(tm) to get a third 320 gig drive and get some kind of RAID array? RAID 5 i was thinking. or should i just wait and see if it pans out with my current config and upgrade later?
4) will the power supply generate enough power?
5) if i wanted to overclock later, does my config lend itself well to that?

anyways, that's my overly verbose 1st post over, i guess once i start getting into this fast pc malarky there may be many more....

thanks in advance,

alex

You're not going to be able to legally run OSX86 on non-Apple hardware. Wait for WWDC Aug. 7th and see what the Mac Pro will have. My guess says it'll start off with a Conroe and go as high as dual (or quad) Woodcrests on a 1333 MHz FSB.

unfortunately, all my VJ content is on pc application format. migrating to osx, as tempting as it may be, is a task i would not wish to undertake.

fine then, take out the osx86 bit... is the spec going to last?

You have specced DDR ram but that cpu/mobo combo requires DDR2 memory.
Something like this would be good: G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit - £124.49

thanks. this pc building is truly arcane knowledge.
