I sold an item on [another site] and the buyer is claiming it was left in the rain even though I used a signed for service. Now he wants an image of the receipt, what should my next move be to protect myself going forward?

Yeah i bet they have a broken one. Any serial numbers recorded? If not take it up with courier company and try get proof of delivery to shut them up. I hope you didn't use ebay

I didn't think to record the serial # and yes it's ebay...

I do have the receipt and looking at the tracking data there is only one entry still from when it was initially posted. (royal mail)

What's the problem here? If it's damaged then get them to send you photos of the packaging and claim from the courier, then issue a refund once the buyer has returned the package to you.

Should I send the image of the postage receipt or not? It's doing my head in trying to think like a scammer and figure out how they might use my next action against me.

Id be unsure if to or not, Are they trying to make a claim against royal mail with the info off the receipt? Id let them open a case, Offer return and claim against the postal service if its correct.

but if ebay do get involved prepare to bend over and be royally ******!

Did you insure the item in postage? you should be covered anyway if it was sign for olny and still have the recipt, but Royal mail only covers up to £50 i think unless u pay extra as an example.
The amount of people scamming on Ebay for computer stuff is unreal, had no idea how bad it was until reading some of the storys on here, I for one won't be selling expensive stuff on there anymore. GL with all anyhow Orangey hope it gets sorted for ya.

I don't think it's a scam, as I once had an item left outside my door and got waterlogged in the rain. I had to claim off Royal Mail in the end, and they only gave me a quarter of what I paid for the item (£13 vs £52) even though I had a copy of the receipt.

I would ask the buyer to provide photos of the packaging and then return the item to you (with the original packaging if possible). Refund them and claim via Royal Mail.

A smart scammer would just claim they never received it and get a full refund straight away as you didn't use a signed for service. It could be legit.

Even signed for doesn't protect you fully, they can just sign for it and claim the signature wasn't theirs and it must have been taken elsewhere.

eBay hasn't been worth the hassle for years.

Then claim compensation from the service you used that agreed to obtain a signature of a recipient and left the parcel outside to get rained on.

This would be the current course of action.
Instruct royal mail, see what info they need to follow it up.
If the chap at the other end is lying, their investigation should demonstrate this.

I'd just raise the claim against Royal Mail right now, if I was you. Leave the ball in their court.

If the guy goes to ebay and requests a refund, you'll be shafted regardless so may as well get everything in motion.

Only the person who has a contract with royal mail can take up a claim with them which would be the sender
