Potentially silly Sandybridge question

I currently have 4gb of Corsair XMS3 Ram is 2x2gb. I decided I wanted 8gb to see if it would make a diffrence with Bf3 So I bought 2x4gb of XMS3. However I was thinking this morning, is it possible that I can use both sets to give me 12gb? or will they not work well together?
 
Can't help on that, I'd assume it would work fine if you had it with one 4GB and one 2GB in each channel, assuming timings are the same.

Side question; did it make a difference?
 
i assume that both sets would work in dual channel mode, seeing as they are matched, but im not sure considering the size difference

yes.

Just check memory settings in bios are the same.

I'm running XMS 3 12gb memory (2x4gb & 2x2gb) on a Extreme 4 Gen 3 board.
