Right, I'm a bit confuzzled.

I have 2 hard drives:
c: Which has windows xp 32 bit on, as well as normal programs, my documents etc etc etc
d: Which contains anything games related (games, steam, teamspeak, fraps etc)

I think now is the time to finally upgrade to Vista 64 bit, but I have always been under the impression that if I wanted to, I would have to format both drives and therefore install all my games again. Is this true?? Or is there a way to just format the c drive, install vista which will then automatically detect all the games on the d drive?

You don't have to format both hard drives since you are only installing Vista on one but you probably will have to reinstall the games, you might be able to keep the saved games and use them though.
