Hi guys,

Just to let you know, we're starting a hackspace in Stoke-on-Trent, home to Overclockers UK.

Potteries Hackspace is a volunteer community organisation where like minded people can meet up, tinker around with electronics, work on a project or just hangout.

No matter who you are, or what age you are, get out of your shed, garage or back room and join us at the hackspace to share in our pool of skills, knowledge and tools.

We want: hackers, makers, programmers, engineers, scientists, artists, hobbyists, photographers, designers, musicians, gamers, videographers, bloggers, builders or enthusiasts.

Do you want 'The Potteries' to be more than just pottery? Then join us!

PS. We'll be at Stoke Comic Con, see you there!

Thanks.

FYI OcUK are not based in Stoke-on-Trent.
It's in Newcastle-under-Lyme, so is Potteries Hackspace. :)

I just love organisations who force this upon people:http://potterieshackspace.org/join/

"Potteries Hackspace is a membership organisation (SIC 94990) and as such is funded in most part by membership subscriptions", Hackspaces don't exist without subscriptions.

hmm another 1 post Ad account
*readies shotgun*

I've been a member before some years ago, I've been lurking for quite some time though. I'll be around, I'm not hard to find.

OP wears Lynx deodorant.

I wear RightGuard.

You did say Stoke-on-Trent in the OP

Why is it called Potteries Hackspace when it isn't in The Potteries?

Holey banana skins Batman, it's a conspiracy!

Or... they were both setup in the Potteries (Stoke-on-Trent) but are currently homed in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which is part of "The Potteries Built-up Area".

Edit: I've lived in the area for my whole life, have you ever tried to explain where Newcastle-under-Lyme is?!? ;)

Ok we need to put this one to rest. Newcastle-Under-Lyme is not in Stoke-On-Trent or Potteries.

It is not part of a 'potteries built up area'.

I demand OP and his organisation change the name to Newcastle-under-Lyme Hackspace or I will be writing a strongly worded letter to the evening sentinel.

Despite now catering for the whole of Staffordshire we decided to keep the name.

Better sharpen your pencil! ;)

just out of interest - if someone were to become self employed in some technical area and fancied some cheap place to work on projects - they could just join one of these hackspace places at a small monthly fee then simply turn up every day and have some free deskspace to work on their projects?

sounds a lot better than paying 400 a month for a desk somewhere...

Yes absolutely, incubator space is an element we're exploring.

We've still got some hurdles to overcome before that's possible, but with enough subscriptions it is certainly possible.

OK but suppose someone joined at the present £15 a month - what is the limit on the amount of hours per week they could use the facilities say? Or is there no limit/nothing preventing them form say turning up every day?

We're still a fairly young space, however, other hackspaces such as Nottingham Hackspace are setup as a "co-working" space and is a great example of what we're trying to achieve.
