I am starting to have issues with my old 470, I have tried everything I can to figure out the issue and have decided I need to bite the bullet and send it to gfx card heaven.

So is it possible with only £150 to spend to get a significantly better card?

Gonna struggle to get something significantly better at that price - especially if you had the 470 overclocked. 660 or 7870 are moderately faster but aside from special offers they are a bit more than £150 at the moment.

What issues are you having with the card? I've not seen many 470s die yet.

Games that have played just fine (CSS) get choppy after a about a minute as does my use of Maya, gfx card fan does not increase in speed when the temps hit 75 (the temp when it gets choppy) so I have to use an external software to govern the speed, this does alleviate it but its getting worse. I have replaced the thermal material and this did nothing to improve it. I tried switching to older drivers that I knew were fine and still the same issue. I also tried a vanilla install of Win 7 and the behaviour was the same.

I thought I might get a better or at least a comparable card considering three years have passed since I got the 470 (which I have never OC'd).

Assuming its a clean install and he didn't reinstall anything infected after that would seem to rule out malware or other software conflicts. Otherwise I'd have said it sounded like the bitcoin malware thats been going around in various forms (i.e. ESEA client for CS:GO).

^^ Seems quite a few 3rd party apps and pirated versions of software/games have embedded bitcoin mining "features" recently. Naturally with the nature of it it causes all kinds of issues due to putting strain on people's GPUs often at unexpected times.

I can't even play my version of CS:GO that I bought because of this problem (I think)

The vanilla version of Win 7 i tested was a complete fresh install with Maya and CSS installed only. To me it seems like something has been affecting the on board fan controller for a long time and slowly its degraded causing further issues with the card.

I also put the card in a friends computer and it had the same choppyness occurring in a vanilla Win 7 install..

Not sure if you are including the sale value of your 470 in your £150 budget - If not then as far as I can see you are hopefully looking at another £50 i.e. an actual budget of £200.:D

And for £200 you are looking 7800xt or 660. - Either of which would be a nice upgrade:)
