I'm being a total dumbass at the moment so please forgive my idiocy.

I'll be making a custom front panel for a Mini ITX build soon and I'll be putting in my own power and reset buttons.

What the hell am I supposed to be buying? I would presume the power button is a push-to-make button, but what would the reset button be? Push-to-make or push-to-break?

Easy way to find out is use a multimeter and set it to continuity test and when you push the button you will know if it is push to make or push to break.. I'm sure all switches on a pc front panel are push to make.

You would be better off in case central. All you need is any type of momentary switch. So when you press of flick the switch, it returns to it's original position when you let go.

They're push to make, non-latching. If you disconnect them from the motherboard then you can either turn on/off and reset by connecting the pins with a screwdriver or similar. Done it many times before, hence it's push to make.

And I hope you'll be using some Bulgin vandal switches or similar. Awesome switches!

The anti-vandal push-to-makes are the best looking switches, but a momentary toggle switch can also look good depending on what kind of style you are after. You can get cheapo momentary push to makes for about 70p if you want to test!

Cheers peeps!

I was sure the power was PTM because I've jumped the pins with a screwdriver many times before, but I'm being THAT thick at the moment it didn't even occur to me that the computer still runs with nothing connected to the reset pins which automatically means reset is PTM too!

D'oh!

Thanks for clarifying this for me though.

@Borden: yes, they are very nice although at this moment I'm not 100% sure exactly what I'll be doing design-wise. I'll probably be posting a build log and pics in the SFF and Case sections though.

On a related but massive tangent, has anybody seen a double-pole double-throw switch for 3 inputs/outpus points at once? Would that be a 6 pole double throw? Been a very long time since I did electronics lol

I might go and post in Case Central too as it's sort of a modding question.

Case central has some experts on this. When you say a DPDT 6 pin, do you mean a DPDT that has three connections on each position? Are you grounding it or something. Take a look at RS Components. You are most likely to find a switch like that on the Bay or somewhere that sells vehicle spares for Land Rovers etc.

Yeah, sorry, I want to double-throw 3 inputs - I've just edited my post.

I'm going to build a dirty switch box for 5.1 sound so I don't have to keep switching the plugs between my headset and my speakers. I found a cool instructable to do it, but the guy's using 3 DPDT switches to do each input individually, and I want to do all 3 inputs in one go.

I'll go post on Case Central.
